Re-imaging from external drive, but no drives appear in the "Select the location ..." list.

Trying to restore the C drive from a regular image on a plain old USB hard drive, while booted from a flash drive. I get to "Select the location of the backup ..." but the list is empty. "Refresh" doesn't do anything. "Advanced..." then gives me the choice to "Search ... on the network" or "Install a driver". The later brings up an "Add Drivers" box, and when I hit OK I get an "Open" box, which does see all the drives. I don't think there's really any Driver that needs installing, and when I get back to the "Select the location ..." window, the list is still empty, and "Refresh" still doesn't do anything.

I must be missing something, but I'm open to any process for restoring the C drive from the image on that USB drive. Do I need to put the folder that contains the image folder in some particular place, with some particular name?

Hi Drew. I'm Greg, awarded MVP for eleven years, Volunteer Moderator, and Independent Advisor here to help you until this is resolved.

If you're using WIndows backup then it should be in a folder named Windows Image Backup and not tampered with at all. Recover as shown here:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/239312/how-to-restore...

If it will not be detected on the external you can try moving it to another attached drive if you have one to see if it sees it there. You can also try browsing into the image from Disk Mgmt to extract any files you need: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/61391-vhd-v...

Windows imaging is no longer supported nor is it recommended by any expert anywhere. The unanimous choice of experts is free Macrium which is fully flexible, easy to use and just works:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Hey Greg,

Macrium it is then. I'm trying to revert to a pretty barebones setup anyway, so I may as well just do a fresh install and save Macrium images as I build back up.

    Thanks,

    Drew
