DWM.exe using a lot of my GPU power when gaming.

Hi, I have noticed that I get poor FPS for some games such as Destiny 2, and when I open up task manager, desktop window manager is using a lot of my GPU, even more than the game itself is using.

I have had this issue for a while now and tried a few things to fix it. I of course restarted my computer, and I also tried changing graphics settings in the game. I also tried to lower the priority of DWM.exe in task manager and raise the priority of the game. When I tried to close desktop window manager it didn't actually close (or maybe it just reopened itself really fast). This issue mainly happens for Destiny 2.

Could someone help me with this please?

Good Day Maple38,

My name is Carlo, I'm an Independent Advisor and community member like you.

I am also using Windows 10 pc. Let us work together to sort this out.

Here's the steps you can try.

-Press Windows key + X

-Go to Settings

-Click Privacy

-Look for "Background Apps"

-Turn Off all "Back Ground Apps,

Restart your computer using cleanboot.

  1. Open the run box by pressing the Windows Key + R and type msconfig
  2. System Configuration Utility box will open and by default you are on general tab.
  3. On the General tab, click the selective startup and make sure that load system service and load startup items both have checked mark.
  4. Click on services tab
  5. Put a check mark on Hide All Microsoft Services
  6. Once Hide all Microsoft Services have checked mark on it, click on Disable All
  7. Click on the Startup Tab and click open task manager. This will open another window which contains all your startup applications on the administrator account.
  8. Disable all application that you're not using. You can simply just click on them and select disable.
  9. Click OK, Apply and close the configuration utility
  10. Restart your pc and the DWM usage in the task manager.

I hope the information above helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Carlo T.

    Greetings Maple38,

I appreciate your time getting back to this thread, cleanboot is a process to disable the apps and services running in the background which are not needed in Windows, cleanboot still allows you to play those games, if it safe to perform, since you already disabled some startup services, it is fine if you are not going to perform the whole process.

If you have any question, feel free to reach us anytime here in the community, we are more than happy to help. Keep us posted about the results.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

    Sincerely,

    Carlo T.

I did most of the things you said to do. I haven't started in clean boot, because the problem only occurs when playing certain games, and to my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) clean boot won't allow me to play those games to see if it still happens. Other than that, I changed my startup and services to only have a few things such as my antivirus and a couple of other important ones.

I'm also about to re-enable a couple of things (Logitech G hub and Steam) because the applications don't appear to be launching properly now when I start them.

I'll post an update if the issue keeps on happening.
