There have been tests done in my country by other security specialists and the results published where they have been in a car in the street ans they have been able to access people's wi-fi networks in their home through inadequate security.
And I just had a look how many wireless networks were nearby to me through connections on a laptop in suburbia: 16 besides mine
Not to suggest you should NOT be concerned over local wireless security, but this particular function is frequently taken way out of context.
Local wireless networks (commonly called WiFi) are very low powered radio signals. They rarely can reach further than about 50 feet from the wireless router. In most cases that distance is much less than that.
If you live in an apartment or condo type of arrangement that means others in neighbouring dwellings can use your network unless you password protect it.
But, be aware that no one can access your network unless they are pretty close.
Many people who live in detached homes have little if any risk of security for that wireless signal.
The risk is primarily of someone using your network capacity to download big videos and the like. It is only rarely going to be data insecurity of your data.
