Hi All

I recently retired and have a few personal documents saved on an encrypted  memory stick issued by work (public sector).

I have just bought a new lap top and need to transfer files from the stick to the new laptop.

However when I tried, Microsoft is saying that it does not support this and I need turn off S mode and if I do security would be compromised and I can't switch back if I do ??.

As you no doubt can tell, I'm not IT savvy hence the the long question and too much background.

Could anyone advise how I get these files from the memory stick to the new laptop ?

Any advice would be welcome.

    Hi Becks1234

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

If you need to install an application named TotalLock.exe you will need to switch out of Windows 10 S Mode

There is absolutely no problem switching out of S Mode, that mode is very limiting and restricts you to installing software from installing anything outside the Microsoft Store

Provided you are a sensible user, and only download software from reputable official sources, then you have nothing to worry about, and switching out of S Mode is free

    Open the Settings App

Go to Update and Security - Activation

In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)

On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button.

After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.
