Windows 10 download speed locked at 100Mbps

I recently re-installed Windows on my computer, and now under the network tab in Settings, it shows that my internet speed is locked at 100Mbps. I have gigabit ethernet installed, and before re-installing was able to get full speed on my internet. I have tried changing the Speed/Duplex settings in the Network Adapter options in Device Manager, setting it to full 1Gbps Duplex, but this has not changed the settings at all, and my speed is still locked at 100Mbps. This isn't a problem with my router, as other devices on the network, both wired and wireless, are able to get full speeds. I also reset the network settings in Settings, but that didn't help either.

    Hello

    Same problem.

All hardware requirements are meet on my system.

My motherboard is Asus Prime B450M-A

My solution on Windows 11 (upgraded from Windows 10):

    1. Goto the settings for the NIC
    2. Find a setting (“Automatic deactivate gigabit speed”…. or something similar).
    3. Deactivate this setting. Voila… NIC now runs at 1 Gbit.

Regarding 2. It’s directly translated from danish, so the setting may be named otherwise in english. Hope you will find the right setting anyway.

    Hey Rodrigo,

I reconnected the cable, it didn’t work, then re-installed and re-updated the drivers via my mobo’s manufacturer page. I have an ASUS X470 Prime Pro. Alas, this hasn’t fixed the problem, and now if I try switching the duplex to 1Gbps, the ethernet stops working altogether, saying there is no cable plugged in. It still works with auto speed/duplex, but is still locked at 100Mbps.

    Hi kinori_,

Good day! This is Jhakesong an Independent Advisor and I will be happy to assist you with this.

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience. Did your current setup worked in 1Gbps speed before? According to this article:

    https://www.windowsdigitals.com/change-ethernet...

A type of ethernet cable could be a factor as to why your speed is just locked on a specific speed.

    Cat6 / Cat5e vs Cat5 / older cables

The most common reason that the Ethernet status shows only 100 Mbps is that you are using a Cat5 or older Ethernet cable instead of the newer Cat5e or Cat6 cable. Cat5 cable supports only up to 100 Mbps, whereas a Cat5e cable can support up to 1 Gbps and Cat6 up to 10 Gbps.

Let me know how it goes. Have a great day!

    Hi All,

I had the issue for a very long time too.

The issue could be because of Windows 10, cause no matter what I tried, I was not able to fix it.

But now that my system has been updated to Windows 11, it seems to get the full speed my router supports.

Windows 11 is the solution. Hope this helps for you guys!

Windows 11 did not solve my problem, my internet still locked at 100mbps.

    Hi kinori_,

I'm Rodrigo, Independent Advisor and I will help you.

First thing to do is reconnect the ethernet cable and see if anything changes.

If it did't work, right click start menu, open Device Manager and update / reinstall your ethernet adapter drivers.
