Screen monitor goes to sleep when computer turned on

I have an HP monitor. Lately, when I turn on my computer the monitor is black, then shows "Monitor going to sleep" and never wakes up. I have to spend some time turning my computer ON and OFF which is not a good thing to do by pushing the OFF button on my computer tower and after some time I'm able to 'catch' a glimpse of trying to 'wake up' and I do something moving my mouse, touching keys, doing 'ctrl-alt-del' to get something going. A total frustration!

I have the settings for the monitor to 'never' go to sleep, however, something's going on that keeps doing it. I don't see anything else that I can change so that every time I turn ON my computer my monitor works right away. For now, it stays in black screen mode and without a screen ON I can't possibly use my computer. Again, there's nothing wrong with my monitor. I've run tests, and it's in perfect condition.

I'm not technical, so I need simple ways to troubleshoot my monitor and I need your help, please.

My name is Jan, I’m an Independent Advisor. Most likely cause by display adapter driver update issues, recent system updates, or cable problems. Please try each method below to resolve this.

    1. Try pressing your Capslock to check if Windows is responsive.

If the keyboard light responds. Press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. You will hear a beep and the display should blink while it attempts to refresh the screen.

    1. Power reset your computer. Press the power button for 10 seconds to turn off then unplug your adapter for 30 seconds then plug your adapter.

then power on again your computer.

    1. Boot your computer in safe mode. Then reinstall the graphics driver.

Boot in safemode from a black screen.

Uninstall the graphics card driver and let Windows download the driver using Windows update.

    Press Windows key + X

    select device manager.

    Expand display adapter

then right-click on your graphics card

    then Uninstall.

    restart your computer.

Then open Windows Update then click Check for updates.

It should download the latest graphics driver and install.

    1. Manually reinstall the graphics driver. Download the latest driver from the Manufacturer site and install it. Also, try the older driver if the latest driver didn't work.

Thank you for your prompt response.

    Step 1 worked well.

Step 2 I did earlier in the morning when turning on my computer and monitor was off.

Step 2 (b) I'm so afraid to do safe mode, would it be safe to do?

I'm so afraid to do uninstall something (I'm 63 and not very technical) during this blackout monitor episodes and won't be able to go back. All my Windows updates are up-to-date, would that mean anything meaning Windows haven't found any issues with my graphics card?

    Please advise, thanks.

Thanks for the update. If you can still boot to Windows normally. I would suggest reinstalling the graphics driver to resolve the black screen. Once you uninstall the driver Windows update will automatically download and reinstall the driver so it is safe to uninstall it.
