My computer restarts randomly. Looking at the events, I found this is caused by user32

The process C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe (DESKTOP-442H1OG) has initiated the restart of computer DESKTOP-442H1OG on behalf of user DESKTOP-442H1OG\light for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found

 Reason Code: 0x800000ff

 Shutdown Type: restart

I would like to understand

(1) How to find the reason for the restart

(2) How to prevent this from happening

Any help will be appreciated.

Update: I assembled a new workstation with another set of hardware. I still experienced the same problem.

The thing that makes me frustrated is that Windows did NOT log down the specific reason/process/thread that triggered the shutdown, which made troubleshooting almost impossible. Besides, both community and customer service did not provide any solution except pasting links of random articles on the internet and "reinstall".

Finally I found the solution by myself: Download from here and do a clean install with formatted disk, it currently runs for 2 weeks without a single restart.

I have tried all the steps mentioned. It still restarts randomly.

Is it possible to monitor the process that calls shutdown.exe?

Also, give that reason code  0x800000ff, what does that mean?

Hi Stepheno. I'm Greg, awarded MVP for eleven years, Volunteer Moderator, and Independent Advisor here to help you until this is resolved.

    1. See fixes for random restarts:

    1. Update your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

    1. Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 17 to test a new Local Admin account. Then if necessary continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thank you Greg for your help. I have tried:

    (1) Repair install

    (2) Remove and reinstall the graphic driver

    (3) Disable restart on failure

    Non of these worked.

I can monitor the 3.3V, 5V, 12V output of PSU using the sensor on the montherboard, none of these seem to have abnormal value when shutdown happens. I was wondering if it is possible to monitor the process that calls shutdown.exe?

    Thanks

    Hi again Stephano -

There were dozens of steps given to try besides the three that you reported back on.

Please do not skip any steps. We often find out later that the fix was the skipped step. If you need help performing any step I will help.
