Windows 20h2 update crashes AMD drivers

Hi.

I've recently updated my Windows version to the latest build, and since then I've had multiple restarts when playing games. I have tried using DDU to remove my drivers (AMD) and reinstalling different versions of them, but all of them cause that launching a game (and sometimes just using the PC normally) will reboot the PC. Windows event viewer suggests this is something to do with "amdkmdag" not being configured correctly and causing a Kernel PnP error. Since this happened more than 15 days ago I cannot rollback the Windows update to a previous version either.

Does anyone know of a solution to this? I have already contacted AMD for support and am waiting an answer.

Thank you for your time.

I've been having the exact same issue here. Have you managed to sort it? I am going crazy and have tried about a hundred different things, nothing works. Ever since 20H2, my AMD graphics drivers just will not work.

    More info:

    Windows: 10 20H2

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3600

    GPU: AMD RX 570

No matter what, my Device Manager > Display Adapter > Properties > Events shows Device: amddwdmg not started (when using latest driver from AMD directly) or amdkmdap not started (when using latest driver available from Windows Update). Here is a copy of what the summarised Event log says about it:

Device PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_67DF&SUBSYS_C5701682&REV_EF\4&1fc990d7&0&0019 had a problem starting.

    Driver Name: oem0.inf

    Class Guid: {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

    Service: amdwddmg

    Problem Status: 0xC00000E5

I've tried the latest drivers (Radeon 21.5.2). I've tried every driver before, going back to 21.3.2. I've tried completely removing the drivers before installing different ones with both DDU and AMD Clean-up Tool, on separate occasions (both in safe mode). I've tried even removing AMD Adrenalin software and just using the safe Windows 10 AMD driver (26.20.15002.61) instead of the latest one, without Adrenalin installed. I've tried removing Afterburner. I've tried sfc/scannow. No matter what, the result is the same. Either amdkmdap fails to start, or amdwddmg fails to start.

No, My GPU is not currently overclocked. It had a safe, stable undervolted overclock prior to this issue arising, but temps never got above 80 degrees Celcius (yes, that's how overly-safe I am with this computer). Of course, this was reset to default once I noticed that suddenly I couldn't play some games properly. Every time I installed a new driver, this was again reset to default.

Strangely, Resident Evil 2 wasn't really affected much by this, however AC Odyssey will not work for more than 2 minutes, since this issue started arising. I had been playing RE2 with this issue in the background without even realising it had been going on. I only realised I was having issues when went back to AC Odyssey for the first time in a month or two and suddenly couldn't play. (Yes, I did also try reinstalling Odyssey just in case).

If anyone has any ideas about what on earth is going on, please feel free to help. I am all out of ideas.

Hey Sumit! Are there any news?

    Best regards.

Hey behindicebergs, i have found your thread, i have no idea if you fixed it or not or in which way. Seems that it is all due to the 20H2 windows version commonly throughout AMD users. I reset my pc in the 20H2 version and any installation in any way of the video drivers in this version show the kernel 411, though the basicDisplay input that is there without any graphics driver works (though it is merely useless). Therefore i am stuck with the windows version 20H2 (i am still holding back on buying a flash drive with windows version 2004) and I am still waiting for some reaction from AMD or Windows on this matter. It is more common than you would think.

I was about to try updating to 21.5.1 through DDU, tried playing AC odyssey doesn't work, works on ghostrunner, far cry primal, south park the stick of truth, hollow knight. I haven't tried getting a flash drive with windows version 2004 and resetting to it. You might as well try that. Heard that AMD came with a fix on that, but so far it's bullsh*t. I got the same statuses btw, and it seems to be regardless of Adrenalin version, even tried one from 2020 spring. My PC is overclocked from 3.5 on CPU to 4.3 but none of that changes the issue. Basically it is between windows and AMD, they have a history of stuff like this, so chill out, try less demanding games, till AMD comes with a brief solution. Shikata ga nai.

Thank you, this is indeed a GPU driver component, ATI Service. I wanted to check if a Windows component was named.

Please share the event logs as nex next step.

Thank you for your reply, Ghost. I used the AMD website to find the drivers and tried both installing them through the installer itself (which include Adrenalin software, which is bad) and using the Device manager to install the drivers from the extracted sub-folders. Both create the same issue. I should probably mention that I'm using and AMD RX 5500 XT video card and intel i-5 9400 CPU.
