Tamper protection turned off and cannot be enabled

For some odd reason, Tamper Protection on Windows Defender turned itself off.  It'd be nice if I could just click and re-enable it, but somehow, this is disabled with the message "This setting is managed by your administrator," except, this is home machine and I AM the  ONLY administrator.  What's going on here and is there a way to turn it on again?

Thank you in advance!

    Hello,

    Note: Create a System Restore point, if you're not familiar with registry.

    Try these steps:

    1. Open Registry Editor.
    2. Go to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Features.
    3. Take ownership of Features key first.
    4. Create/set TamperProtection DWORD and set it to 5 to enable Tamper Protection.

    Hope this helps!

    Dear h27kim,do you have any non-Microsoft anti-virus software installed?

    If so, I recommend that you temporarily uninstall it for testing;

    If you do not have any anti-virus installed and the problem still persists, follow the instructions below:

    Access the link below and download the tool:

    http://www.mediafire.com/file/dvez3yzar3rsl44/W...

    The file will be compressed, use WinRar to unzip it;

    Inside the folder will have two files, Windows.bat and Defender.bat;

    Right-click on Windows.bat and run as an administrator;

    Restart and verify that the problem has been resolved;

    If it still persists, do the same procedure with the Defender.bat file;

    Restart the pc and see if the problem has been solved;

    I hope I helped, see you soon!

    I don't see it (the only file I see is "default.")  I do wonder if I had allowed my workplace (to which I'm connected via MS Teams etc) to control certain settings on my home machine and had forgotten about it.  Is there a way to check this?

    Hello h27kim, welcome to the Microsoft community, my name is Luiz Cruz, an independent consultant and I would be happy to help you.

    For this problem with Defender I recommend that you try the following:

    Do you have any non-Microsoft anti-virus installed on the system? If you have, I recommend that you uninstall it for testing;

    After uninstalling the other anti-virus, check if it is possible to activate Protection;

    If you do not have any other anti-virus installed try the solution below:

    Press Windows key + S and type: regedit and press Enter;

    The “Windows Registry Editor” will open. In it navigate to the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender;

    When clicking on Windows Defender, check if there is a file like "DisableAntiSpyware" in addition to the Standard;

    If this file exists, right click on it and select Delete;

    Restart the PC and check if you can now activate Protection;

    I hope I helped, see you soon!
