Black screen and blinking cursor on top left of screen when laptop turns on after windows update.

I am having a problem where when I turn my laptop on, it just goes to a black screen that has a white cursor that's blinking at the top left of my screen. I tried turning my laptop on and turning it off 3 times to get into safe mode but it didn't work. I also tried spamming the escape key and delete key when I turned my laptop on but they did nothing. When I tried spamming the f12 key though, it took me to the windows boot manager and it said "ATA HDDO: PNY CS900 120GB SSD ATA HDD2 : SanDisk SSD U110 166B PCI LAN: IBA GE Slot 00CCB v1550." I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440s.

    Hi, I’m Douglas, Independent Advisor. Welcome to the Community. I’m happy to help you today.

    I believe that this scenario is associated with your computer's video driver. To be able to revert it, you will need to access Windows 10 in safe mode. As you are not able to start it, the only way to access the advanced boot options is to force the system to reboot.

    Turn on your computer, when presenting the screen with the Windows 10 logo

    Press the Power button until your computer shuts down. Perform this procedure 03 times, the fourth time the system will start in repair mode

    When you are finished, you will be able to access the advanced boot options.

    Click Troubleshooting> Advanced Options> Startup Configuration.

    Click Restart.

    Press the 5 or F5 key on the keyboard and the system will start up in secure mode with network.

    Log in with your user and install the generic video driver:

    1. Press the Windows + X keys simultaneously;
    2. Click on the Device Manager option;
    3. Click the arrow that points to Video Adapters;
    4. Right-click on the installed device and click Properties;
    5. Click the Driver tab> Update Driver> Search Computer for Driver Software;
    6. Click Allow me to choose from a list of device drivers on the Computer;

    Click Microsoft Basic Video Adapter and select the Next button.

    Restart the system.

    If it worked, go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest Windows 10 compatible video driver for your device.

    The indication as you are seeing usually means the boot is being directed to a non bootable location.

    I am not sure what the F12 indications mean but you might check your Bios, if you can, for the primary boot device.  If you have a newer system, it should be Windows Boot Manager.  If it is an older system, it may be a drive is indicated.

    Is there any chance a drive might have failed?

    A drive probably didn't fail because it was running fine before the update and there were no problems.
