Sony WH-1000MX4

Hello,

Last December, I bought a new pair of headphones: WH-1000MX4. I use them for music and for gaming and when I'm listening to music, they work great. But when I'm gaming... not so much.

When choosing an output device, I can choose between WH-1000MX(Stereo) and WH-1000MX(Hands-Free AG Audio). The first one sounds great and the second one sounds terrible, but the biggest problem is that I can't use the headphone's mic when I choose the Stereo as an output device. And thus I am obligated to use my laptop's built-in microphone. So when I am gaming, I need to choose between crappy game-audio for me or crappy voice chat audio for my friends.

I think the problem is with Windows, because when I connect my headphones to my phone, the microphone works just fine and the sound is great.

So, my question is: How to enable great audio, whilst also being able to use the headphone's mic instead of my laptop's mic. How to enable WH-1000MX4(Stereo) AND the headphone's microphone?

I hope you can help,

Teun

Hi @Teun, your post is very welcome in our community.

My name is Wiliam, I am an Independent Consultant and like you, I'm also a user of the Windows system for a long time. I am grateful to be able to help you today.

I understand how difficult it is when the device or app won't work in the way you expect, but I found information on the Sony website stating that "Headphones (WH-1000XM4 Stereo)" is only used for music playback and for "speaker and Microphone ", you should user "Headset (WH-1000XM4 Hands-Free)". Follow and info from Sony for reference:

    [https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wirele...](https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wh-1000xm4/articles/00250089)

They also inform that these options may differ depending on the app you are using and If the list shows only the headphones model name and does not suggest the purpose of use (for Hands-Free or Stereo), select your headphones model name.

Anyway, please take a look at this solution provided by another community member, which helped lots of people with similar issues:

Please let me know if you need any further assistance regarding this matter?

All wireless gaming headsets use 2.4 GHz dongle, not Bluetooth for this reason.
