Can't download latest windows update.

I'm told that a "Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1" is available, but the windows update screen says "Updates are available, but they are too big to download over your current connection. We'll download the updates as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi."

Why would I want to use wifi instead of the Ethernet connection?

I just bought a new gigabit router/switch combination to take advantage of an upgrade to 200mbps (and because my WRT54G router kept needing to be reset). I'm connected via a CAT5e Ethernet cable to the router. Why would I want to use wifi? Yes, the computer came with a wifi card, but I have it turned off. Wired is better.

I tried clicking on "advanced" and "Download updates over metered connections (extra charges may apply", but the "download" button still does nothing. I would like to manually initiate the 1/2 gigabyte download so it's not tying up my bandwith or computer when I'm trying to use it, but why does the button do nothing? How would I fix it? Before it was saying how bit the update was, but after I tried to download it, the screen changed to this, which persisted after a restart:

If the download is that big, couldn't I download it manually from Microsoft's site?

You can. Use the enablement package from this link.

Thanks for your reply. I've only ever used a metered connection even on a full installation and update from the start and never had any problems up to now. the only thing I've changed was my phone service provider. I changed from giffgaff to smarty a few weeks ago and this problem started with the message saying update available but too large for current connection. The metre connection is set to on and also I have set up unlimited data so has no restrictions on data use. All website searches work ok as does YouTube and Microsoft store also updates ok. Printer also functions as it should. I've also noticed that the pause updates is misted out so it cannot be paused. same with the change pause time setting. It doesn't concern me too much at the moment as everything seems to be working perfectly and up to a few weeks ago everything was fully up to date including the latest version 21H1.

<> NEW UPDATE SATURDAY 24TH JULY FROM YESTERDAYS MESSAGE ABOVE. ive just gone to microsoft update catalog and downloaded the update that would not install from there its now all sorted. i got this info from youtube. did not take long to download but took half hour to install. hope this helps others

I got it with the manual download option, and then got a notice for 3 more updates after it installed. Those worked as normal.

No, and the troubleshooter couldn't find the problem. I get "Updates are available, but they are too big to download over your current connection. We'll download the updates as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi."

Again, I'm connected via wired Ethernet.

I even disabled the Wifi card from the Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network Connections.

I see no reason to use wifi when I've got a direct CAT5e Ethernet connection to the router/switch/wifi hotspot device. I've never used the Wifi on this computer. Would it help if I pulled out the card that came bundled with it?

If the download is that big, couldn't I download it manually from Microsoft's site?

I recall doing that with a few of the larger updates for XP and more rarely Vista or 7 to pass along to friends who were stuck with dial-up or crappy "broadband" with 128K or even 256K internet connections. Especially the service packs, which I burned onto CDs and passed along.

An upgrade now takes 30+/- GB.
