Hello everybody,

I am trying to install an app on android devices using an APK.
I uploaded the apk to intunes I assigned it to the group of devices and everything seems fine.
Every other app that i deploy with managed play store installs immediatly with no problems.

It seems like intune is not even trying to install the apk. I am getting no errors and somehow when i check the managed apps for the devices the app does not show up.

Is there any option or policy i need to set to get intune to push it to the devices.

the devices are android 10 moto g and every other intune stuff works like a charm. sadly this apk app is the main workhorse that needs to be installed everywhere.

I also tried to wrap the app now. Sadly it did not help with the deployment problem.

Steps to resolve this.

Go to Apps

Click on Android

Click on Add

Click Managed Google Play App

Click Select

On the left side of your screen, click the Lock icon (Private Apps)

Click the "+" sign at the bottom right of your screen to add the app.

It should show on your list of apps.

Steps to resolve this.

Go to Apps

Click on Android

Click Managed Google Play App

Click Select

On the left side of your screen, click the Lock icon (Private Apps)

Click the "+" sign at the bottom right of your screen to add the app.

It should show on your list of apps.

Looks like intune is absolutely not useful for my purpose. thats sad.

This is not an Intune limitation. This is how Google designed Android Enterprise to work. There are ways of registering alternate stores as well, but this isn't directly an Intune capability.

Why can't your app be uploaded to Managed Google Play?

we need to work with the amazon flex app. wich is not listed on play store but freely downloadable.
If I try to upload the apk in our private managed store google refuses the file.

If I understood that correctly then the play store checks the version and blocks it for me if the author has it registered in his private play store..... I guess amazon itself has it registered.

so i guess my last resort would be manual installation or go back to android device administrator.

maybe you have another suggestion or can point me in a direction i might look into?

Update: I can also not use the android device administrator for this because the android version is 10 or higher.

This is a kind of Intune limitation only. The feature of deploying LOB apps on devices is working fine on AirWatch MDM (Workspace ONE) for devices enrolled as an Android enterprise.

Not really. Other MDMs have this because they use a custom DPC and the older EMM API (both of which are discouraged by Google and in fact they no longer allow new custom DPCs to be registered). Microsoft chose to follow Google's newer and recommended guidelines of using the Google provided DPC and the AMAPI for Intune. Thus, the limitation here is because of design choices made by and enforced by Google.

Thanks for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.

Per my experience, LOB apps in Intune for Android are only applicable on Device Administrator managed Android devices- not Android Enterprise devices (including personally-owned work profile, dedicated, fully managed, and corporate-owned work profile enrollments). You can use Intune to orchestrate app deployment through Managed Google Play for any Android Enterprise scenario. You’ll need to find a way to deploy from Managed Google Play.

Thank you for that information sadly uploading to managed play store is no option because the app we use can not be uploaded.

So my only chance is to either sideload it manually (I tried that but it kept getting uninstalled automatically even with unknown sources allowed).
Or to make the phone not company owned and just use the work profile. (that defeats the whole purpose of restricting access to just the work apps)

Looks like intune is absolutely not useful for my purpose. thats sad.

I really dont understand why it is so hard to have a company owned phone with a 3rd party app. I feel that is a pretty common szenario.

Is there any alternative to get this working?

That should be stated in bold letters under "Add an Android line-of-business app to Microsoft Intune" documentation. Apparently, it only (still) works for device administrator.

You're free to suggest content changes to docs pages if you feel this is appropriate. As noted in my other response, keep in mind that this is a Google Android limitation and not a Microsoft Intune one.

I don't think this is Google Android limitation and infact it seems an limitation for Microsoft Intune. I am able to use Samsung KNOX to deploy apk on my samsung devices.

@hitesh jain , that is because Samsumg Knox is doing something outside of the standard Android Enterprise ecosystem, something either proprietary or legacy that will be phased out by Google. The Android docs on this are clear as are the Intune docs.
