Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1

My laptop downloaded the update "2021-05 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64 (KB5003254)", that I have not yet installed.

If I click on "View optional updates", I see this:

I cannot find anything explaining what "Feature updates to Windows 10, version 21H1" means. I am a little bit interested to what I would install.

So my question is:

what happens if I check that item? What are those super-secret feature updates to the OS of my laptop?

Hi, I'm Robinson, an Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you.

The "Feature updates to Windows 10, version 21H1" is a Windows 10's May 2021 Update, also known as 21H1, that was released on May 18, 2021. This is a smaller update that focuses on security improvements.

    -New Windows Hello multi-camera feature.

-News and interests widget for Windows 10 21H1 taskbar.

-Windows Mixed Reality new feature to set the sleep timer for headsets.

-Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) improvements.

-Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) improvements.

-New Microsoft Edge (Chromium) support for kiosk mode on Windows 10 May 2021 Update.

-WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service improvements.

-Updates the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Device Management (DM) sync protocol.

-Windows 10 startup times for apps with roaming settings improvements on version 21H1.

-Windows Server Storage Migration Service new feature to migrate from NetApp FAS arrays to Windows Servers and clusters.

John, thanks but I really would like to know what I could install today as an option. If that's not possible, I will obviously note install them, now or in the future.

Based on your reply, I should install them only if I am experiencing issues. But how could I know if I needed them? That's the basic question.

Ok, thank you for the clarification, I will be less worried when I restart the PC.

However, my original question remains unanswered: what are the optional updates I might install? I think it is a little strange that there is absolutely no information about an action that could potentially make my OS unstable.

Thank you for your reply, but I am a bit confused.

The page you linked seems to refer to the update my machine has already downloaded and that is named 21H1, but my question concerned the optional update that seems not to be included in that update.

Does the unchecked "Optional update ..." in the second screenshot correspond to the update my laptop downloaded?

In that case, I am even more confused: did my OS download and schedule an update that is not advisable to install?

    Hello lord_thistle,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today.

Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1 is the latest version of Windows 10 released recently. You can find more details in the link below.

    https://www.howtogeek.com/685996/whats-new-in-w...

If you are not experiencing any issues with your system, it is not advisable to install these optional updates. I recommend downloading and installing the latest drivers from your Manufacturer's Support Page instead of Windows Update.

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

    Kind regards,

    John DeV
