Xbox app not recognizing updated pc drive configuration

Built a machine a few years ago with a C ssd for Windows, and a pair of 2 TB hdds in a RAID 1 config labeled D, driven by my motherboard. Used that layout for a year and then removed the RAID layout and kept the two drives as D and E in a standard IDE config.

All is working well since then, except the xbox app won't show the E drive as an option. When picking a default game save location, or when installing a new game, I can see the C drive or a block of two identical D drives. There's no E option, nor can I pick either of the two D drives separately.

I've tried setting the Windows system storage default to the E drive, uninstalling the xbox app, rebooting, and reinstalling but it goes right back to the C drive. And the combo box listing for drives in the app still shows C and two D drives.

Guessing there's an old registry setting somewhere that the xbox app is reading, that isn't getting reset on uninstall/reinstall. Other apps like Steam handle the drive layout just fine-- just the xbox app having issues.

Running Win 10 Pro, build 19041.985 with xbox app 2105.1001.19.0 downloaded today.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I have an xbox game pass subscription -- big library of current and older games included that you can install and play via the xbox app. Similar to the epic launcher, ea origin, etc. Pretty much never open the ms store.

Would prefer not to clutter the C drive with games or other applications I'll use only occasionally. Hence the larger secondary drives. Guess I can try installing something small on C and moving it to E via settings. But I doubt it'll have any effect on the xbox app not reading the drive configuration properly.

Ultimately need the xbox app to read the current drive configuration, or I'll be forever stuck with only one drive effectively available to install to.

    Thanks.

That's the xbox app. Dialog that pops up when choosing to install a game and opting to "change" the default drive. Same combo box issue when choosing the Settings/General/default install drive too.

Windows Storage options point give me the choice of C, D, or E and they're working fine. But the xbox app overrides this default choice. Tried setting System Storage to point to E, then uninstalled xbox app, rebooted, and reinstalled xbox app and it still went to the C drive. All drive selection dialogs in the xbox app retained the same wrong options as above.

This is why I'm thinking it's a registry value or ini file that xbox app uses to offer available drives. This behavior isn't evident in windows or any other application on the machine, as far as I've seen.

    Thanks,

    John

John, that does look corrupted or dysfunctional.

Does that image come from a game utility, or from Windows?

Go into Windows Settings > System > Storage and see what it offers for Change where new content is saved > Apps

In Disk Management, highlight each drive and from Action tab choose Rescan Disk, then check again.

    Hi Greg,

    Snapshot below.

Hear what you're saying about install locations, but I'm only an occasional gamer on this machine so not worried about disk performance. Am surprised that xbox app would try to override my selection though, if this is the case. Not a behavior I see with any other game installers on this machine-- Steam, Origin, Epic, and Battle.net are all on it and behave as expected with the drives.

Also inserting a snip of the xbox app presenting me with install options for a game download, showing the odd drive choices.

    Thanks,

    John

Hi SuperJX. I'm Greg, an Independent Advisor.

It's likely blocking you from moving games to a drive that will significantly reduce their speed. This is why WIndows, apps and games should remain on C, or if they must be moved apps & games should never go to a slower drive as it will slow the game up to half the speed of an SSD.

Files do not suffer the same speed differential so if you need to make space I'd instead move the User folders to the other drives using this method:

If you want you can post a screenshot of Disk Management, which I read like a doctor reads X-rays. I might be able to spot something else involved. Follow the steps here so I can see everything needed to advise you: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/foru...

Feel free to ask any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
