27" Apple Cinema Display with Windows 10 PC - Unable to Change Resolution

I am trying to use a 2011 27" Apple LED Cinema Display (2560 × 1440) with my work laptop (Dell / Windows 10 Pro / Intel UHD Graphics 620 adapter). The Generic PnP Monitor driver that the system is defaulting to as "best" will only give a single resolution of 1280 x 720 which is awful for working on spreadsheets. Is there a driver or other solution that would enable me to change the resolution to a setting that is usable? I'm using a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adapter ("supports video resolutions up to 3840 x 2160") to connect the two. Any help is appreciated!

    Hi,

Sorry for the delay in response.

We were researching on this and seems that the issue here is the WD19TB.

We would like you to dual link DVI-D output to get full resolution out of a Cinema Display.

We suspect the DisplayPort (DP) output from the dock is the standard Single Link DVI output (DisplayPort - Wikipedia). A dual link DVI-D output would require an active (powered) DP output.

We would like you to test this by removing the dock and plugging the Cinema Display directly into the Thunderbolt or HDMI ports from the Latitude (Latitude 5500: Visual Guide to your Computer | Dell US)

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Seems that you are using 27" Apple LED Cinema Display for your Dell Desktop PC. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below:

    • What is the Windows 10 version and Build installed? (Type winver in Windows search/Run command)
    • What is the model number of the Dell PC?
    • Does it happen from the beginning or did you observe any changes on the PC?

As per Technical specification article from Apple, the supported resolutions are 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels: **** LED Cinema Display (27-inch) - Technical Specifications

We also noticed in the article that System Requirements are Mac with Mini DisplayPort connector & Mac OS X v10.6.4 or later. But you are using a Windows 10 operating system and that could be a concern.

In this case, we would suggest you to check, if you are able to change the resolution in Windows Settings > System > Display > Display Resolution.

If the issue persists, then you may want to check with the Apple support team.

    Regards,

    Aditya Roy

    Hello Aditya,

Thank you for your assistance with this. I'm using a Dell Latitude 5500 laptop with a WD19TB docking station (connecting via a DisplayPort connection on the docking station). The Windows version/build is 20H2 / 19042.985. The only resolution option available using the Display Resolution setting has been1280 x 720.

I use the monitor for photo editing on my MacBook Pro laptop. I need to use two monitors for my work and would like to make use of the Apple Cinema Display monitor since I don't have room to add a third monitor on my desk. It is definitely designed for Mac products, but many users seem to have success using it with the DP to Mini DP adapter and Windows 10.

I had already talked with the Apple support team (and Dell support team) and they didn't have a solution. They were clearly constrained by not being familiar with the Windows OS. They recommended reaching out to Microsoft for assistance, which led me here. Praying there is someone here who can figure out the secret to make this work.
