keyboard mute/unmute button not working

I have looked around for answers on this topic but it always brings me to people who have mute buttons on their external device, I do not. I use the one built into my keyboard, but recently it has stopped working. when I hit the button it'll say "microphone on/off" but it doesn't actually mute the sound. how do I fix this to where it's actually working properly so I can mute/unmute myself without manually doing it in discord/game bar.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community. I am Juliet and It's my pleasure to help you today.

    I know how frustrating this may be for you but I'll do my very best to help you :)

    I would suggest you try to run the Recording Sound troubleshooter at Start button > Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot.

    Try updating and reinstalling the Microphone driver in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu, then Device Manager, then Audio Input and Output devices, then Microphone . Choose Microphone then Driver tab, then Update > Automatically. If no newer try Driver tab > Update > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previously installed drivers. If that fails try Driver tab > Uninstall, restart PC to reinstall driver.

    Hello and thank you Juliet Erum

    I was able to get the button to work again, but now I am unable to hear audio through my headphones. audio plays through my laptop's speakers but it refuses to work once I plug in my headphones. I know you only stopped by to help with the microphone button but since this problem only surfaced now I thought I'd ask here instead of making a whole new thread. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of the audio drivers and reset but it still does not work.
