Issues with Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)

I've been having issues transferring media off of my phone and and digital SLR camera via USB. When I plug in the device, a popup window will say that it is setting up the device and then say that it is ready to go. However I am unable to see it in file explorer.

When I go to device manager the device will be listed under 'other devices' with a driver error. When I go to update the driver and choose MTP USB Device I get "Windows encountered a problem while setting up your device. Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them. The system cannot find the file specified."

I tried going to the Windows INF folder and installing the wpdmtp.inf directly and get the "The system cannot find the file specified" error as well.

Any help?

I am running windows home version 21H1.

Thanks!

I already tried both of those. In the Nikon App you mentioned it does not see the camera plugged in. I have already setup my motorola phone to allow file transfer.

Here's what I am seeing in device manager:

    Hi @JoeLindsey1.

This is an old Nikon camera model and according to the information in the manual, the software that the manufacturer provides is only compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. You can check this information in your manual as well or online on the Nikon website on the following link:

    https://download.nikonimglib.com/archive2/bFpVn...(En)02.pdf

However Nikon has a program called "ViewNX-i" to allow you to copy photos from your camera to your computer and according to the website, the latest version of this program is compatible with Windows 10:

I put the 2 info I found in the image I'm sending you now.

So I recommend that you download and install the "ViewNX-i" program so that you can copy your photos to your computer. But if there is any problem, it is best that you look for help on the Nikon forum, because from the information above, it does not seem to be a problem on the operating system side.

With regard to copying files from your Motorola phone, in order for the computer to read and copy the information you need to allow this action in the device's operating system (Android ). If this is not done, you will not be able to copy the files to your computer.

I hope I have helped you in some way with these info.

    Best Regards

    Wiliam D.

It's a Nikon D5100 camera and a Motorola G Power 2021 phone. Neither will connect and I've tried different cords and USB ports.

Hi @JoeLindsey1, your post is very welcome in our community.

My name is Wiliam and I am grateful to be able to help you today.

I understand how difficult it is when the device or app won't work in the way you expect, but have you already installed the latest drivers that your camera's manufacturer makes available for your operating system version?

If this has not been done, the OS may be working with corrupted or outdated drivers and unexpected problems may occur, do you understand?

If you tell me what the manufacturer is, the exact model of your camera, I can help you with the web search.

    Best Regards

    Wiliam D.
