Laptop keeps disconnecting from WiFi

Yeah, self explanatory issue.

My laptop will randomly disconnect from the Internet and remain disconnected for a few minutes at a time before reconnecting. During this time I can't manually reconnect (it just tells me "Unable to connect"), and sometimes my network list even appears empty. My laptop also seems to be the only device affected by this as my tablet can connect just fine, so I have ruled out the possibility of a router problem (although correct me if I'm wrong).

The networking troubleshooter program often doesn't fix the problem entirely, so I've tried to take it into my own hands. I've tried so many possible solutions, like making the network private, reinstalling the WiFi drivers and changing their settings, running netsh and ipconfig commands, and still the problem doesn't appear to have gone away.

Help would be hugely appreciated because seriously, I'm at my wits' end with this issue.

Thank you,
Jack

    Hello again Paloma,

I tried to download and install new drivers from the HP website, but it doesn't look like they've installed, most likely because I just downloaded the same version of them and they just assume there's not a problem with them? I will try again and let you know if anything changes, but at the moment I'm having no joy with that.

Method 1 was one of the first things I did when I found out about the issue. Method 2 is something I'm very reluctant to try, since my laptop isn't particularly high-end and it probably wouldn't take "Ultimate Performance" too well. I have set it to ordinary "High Performance" mode, if that does anything.

If it makes any difference at all, I use a VPN from time to time. I'm not sure if that could possibly be part of the problem. I also had a similar issue back in January, but as it turned out it was my Bluetooth mouse that was causing the issue. Now I really don't think there could be anything causing it other than a hardware failure within my PC.

Side note - when I run network diagnostics it tells me "association failed" and something along the lines of "Windows could not connect to [network], try again or contact your ISP" in the logs. This is another thing that suggests to me the cause of the problem is just out of my control.

If there's any chance you could help me further, that would be great.

    Thank you,

    Jack

EDIT: False alarm, it's fine after all, I downloaded some older drivers and they appear to be working fine, thank you again for your patience with me. :)

Actually, as it turns out, I was wrong.

I thought things were fixed but then, out of nowhere, it happened again.

Why will my WiFi not just work normally?

    Hi Paloma,

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked Windows Update and my HP support program and it turned out I had missed a driver update. I installed it and my WiFi issue looks like it's fixed now.

Once again, thanks for your help!

    Jack
