No item match your search - tried everything

Hi,

As described in the subject the search bar in windows doesn’t work. It doesn’t find anything even though I search for *.*

If I try the same research on the drive c: some file get found, in about 2 seconds and they are really few.

I tried to rebuild the index several times. Now after leaving it to index some time it says 5,413 items indexed

After trying all fixes I found on google ( including https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/search-problems-and-strange-behavior/a732572e-6337-48b1-b65b-890549cee55d) the issue persists. So I tried an in place upgrade as last resource, nothing.

The indexing troubleshooter keep finding the issue, fixes it and as soon as I run the troubleshooter again it continues to find the same issue, which I fixed 20 times up to now.

Is there a way to fix it without formatting the pc? Really I won’t stand to do it another time!

Thanks

Franco

    1. Click the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys
    2. Roll your mouse down and look for Windows Explorer in it and click Restart

    Do the test, and see if it works again, if it didn't solve the error, go to the step below:

    STEP 2

    1. Click the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys
    2. Click File and Run New Task and type: Msconfig and click Ok
    3. Click Services check the box Hide all Microsoft services, disable all those left, click Apply and OK
    4. Restart the system

    Take the test, if it didn't, go to the step below:

    STEP 3

    1. Click the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys
    2. Click File and Run New Task and type: PowerShell and check the box create this task with administrative privileges and click OK
    3. Within PowerShell run the command below and enter:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "SystemApps"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

    Ignore errors that may arise and let the process complete.

    After completion Restart the System and see if it works again.

    I await news, I hope I have helped!

    As soon as I start the indexing service (Windows search), windows search stop working. Meanwhile I tried again with /restorehealth and /sfc scannnow without any success

    Always the same problem. Do you think this is due to wrong setting or windows 10 not working properly, even if an in-place upgrade was made?

    I managed to spot which is the windows service, that causes the problem: WSearch (Windows search). Now when I search something it will find it and a yellow bar on the top of the windows alerts me that the search might be slow because the index is not running.

    How is it possible?

    Thank again

    Thank you Claudier,

    Trying a new account did’t solve the problem

    I tried DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth  and sfc /scannow before proceeding with the in-place upgrage, does it make sense doing it another time? Maybe using the /offline function to restore health from a wim installation file?

    Anyway thank to you I found something.

    The clean boot doesn’t solve the problem but restarting the pc in safe mode does.

    The same happens if i select “diagnostic startup” in msconfig meanining that also a bunch of Microsoft services get disabled.

    Does it mean that the problem is caused from a microsoft sevice?

    Hi, my name is Claudeir, I'm happy to help you!

    I know you've tested several steps, but let's follow some procedures to solve the problem without having to do the full formatting of the system:

    -Clean startup:

    Clean boot is for you to determine if a background program is interfering with your system or to optimize your system load.

    For clean boot follow the steps below:

    On the Desktop, press the Windows + R keys simultaneously to open Run;

    In the Run Menu type msconfig command and click OK to open System Configuration;

    On the Services tab, check Hide All Microsoft Services and Click Disable All;

    Click Apply and OK;

    Restart the computer.

    NOTE:This procedure disables all third-party services and programs. You can later, if the problem is solved in this way, enable the programs and services that will start with Windows, selectively, instead of keeping them all disabled. If the problem returns after activating the startup of a specific service or program, the problem is exactly in the startup of this software and it is recommended to remove it.

    Take the test and see if it resolved.

    -Right click on start, run PowerShell(admin) or Command Prompt(admin)

    Copy and paste the following command:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    and press Enter.(Note: This step may take a few minutes to start and up to 30 minutes to complete).

    After you see a message saying "The operation completed successfully", copy and paste this command:

    sfc /scannow

    and press Enter.

    Wait for a message that says "Verification 100% complete".

    So add this command:

    chkdsk /f /r /b

    Confirm with "Y" and restart the computer for this last step.

    Take the test and see if it resolved.

    -New user account.

    Your user profile is a set of settings that make your computer look and work the way you want it to. It contains your desktop background settings, screen savers, pointer preferences, sound settings, and other features. Due to this variety of personal settings and changes caused by other programs can cause corruption of your user profile and malfunction in system usage hence the need for a new profile.

    On the Desktop, press the Windows + R keys simultaneously to open Run;

    In Run type control userpasswords2 and click OK; (There is a space after the control)

    On the Add tab, and Sign in without a Microsoft account (not recommended).

    Click to create a Local Account.

    Enter a username and password, add a password hint and click Next and then Finish.

    In the Users tab select the name of the new user click Properties;

    On the Group Membership tab check the Administrator option, click Apply and OK;

    Restart the computer and login to the new user account and see the behavior.

    If it solves the problem, you can transfer the data to the new user:

    In the admin user you created, press the Windows+R keys, type: %systemdrive%\users (in English and without spaces)

    and click Ok. Check your previous user's folder and click the left mouse button, it may take a while to process the data, in a few minutes access to your files will be released, select the folders you want to move, to copy them press (CTRL+C), to cut them press (CTRL+X) and to paste press (CTRL+V) in your new user.

    After migrating your data, delete your previous user: Press the Windows+R keys, type netplwiz and click OK. Select your previous user and click Remove.

    Take the test and see if it resolved.

    -If necessary, make a recovery keeping your files, solves most of this type of problem. Windows+i> Update and security> Recovery> Start now. You can keep your files.

    Feel free to leave your opinion, marking as answered if the answer helped, or leaving more details so that we can continue the service, this is very important to us.
