I have a 3.5mm jack headphone that I plugged into the port with the little picture of headphones on the font of my desktop computer, but nothing happens. My computer does not recognize my headphone. Only my speakers are listed in Settings/System/Sound/output devices. I would like to be able to toggle between my speakers and my headphone.

    Hi loyall

How are you? I hope you are doing good.

Welcome to Microsoft Community. I am Juliet, an independent advisor. It's my pleasure to help you today. I know how frustrating this may be for you but I'll do my very best to help you :)

I suggest you to make sure that the headphone that you are using are set as default in the computer. Follow these steps to check this:

    1. Right click on the volume icon and select “Playback devices”.
    2. Right click on empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
    3. Select “headphone” and click on “Properties” and make sure that the headphone is enabled & set as default.
    4. Reconnect your headphones and check if issue is resolved.

I hope it helps! Let me know the results.

A lot of computer manufacturers don't separate computer speakers and headphones --- so there is NO separate entry for headphones.

Can you spot the difference between these 2 pictures? Both have "speakers" as playback devices.

The first picture is computer speakers plugged in the back. The second picture is computer speakers plugged in the back and headphones plugged in the front. The realtek audio console already knows that I plugged in my headphones in the front panel and offered me headphone virtualization.

It is standard operating behavior that your computer speakers would mute when you insert your headphones into the front panel.

A lot of desktop computers don't have the ability to multi-stream a second audio source to the headphone.

It depends on whether your computer manufacturer give the feature to you in their audio driver or not.

Second audio source is not in question. Headphone is not recognized. How can I install?

I right click on the volume icon in the Systray on the Task Bar, but “Playback devices” is not an option.

However the option "Spatial sound (off)" brings up "Off Windows sonic for headphones"
