Windows 10 display color depth stuck at 8-bit

Hi,

I am having problems with my display on windows 10. I have Asus zenbook 14 and I have just bought it less than 2 years ago. I noticed a while ago, that the display image, appear grainy and are not as smooth as needed. So I checked the advanced display properties, I saw that the color depth is at 8-bit. When I tried to change it (as in the second photo attached) it seems that the changes are applied, but still remains at 8-bit on the advanced display settings window, and the image quality is still low.

Moreover, I have an external Graphics card, Nvidia Geforce MX250, I have tried to manage the 3D settings on the Nvidia control panel, and applied to use High-performance Nvidia processor as preferred option on global settings, but this not again effecting the image quality either, images are not smooth.

Could you please provide some kind of a solution for that matter and guide me through it.

Appreciate your help in advance.

Hi Maral, my name is Neil, I'm an independent adviser and a Windows 10 user like you.

I'll be happy to answer your question.

This is actually a little misleading on behalf of Microsoft as they simply forgot to put "per channel" after the 8 Bit.

As you can see from my own Advanced Display Settings in the picture below, I have the same report as you.

You can see in both yours and my screenshots, below the 8 Bit, it says RGB.

    The RGB channels are:

    8 BIT - RED

    8 BIT - GREEN

    8 BIT - BLUE

8 BIT - X CHANNEL (used for transparency)

    4 x 8 BIT Channels = 32 Bit RGB

So you do actually have 32 BIT RGB Colour.

From your screenshot, your images appear fine to me. They don't look grainy? Make sure your scale & layout is set to 100% (recommended) and your resolution is set to (recommended) if 1920 x 1080 is your recommended resolution the that's fine.

To set App preference to use your Nvidia graphics card do the following:

Go to Settings > System > Display

Scroll down to the bottom and click on "Graphics settings"

Where it says "Choose an App to set preference" click the drop down box and select either a "Desktop App" or a "Microsoft Store App".

A desktop App will be something like an App or game you install yourself and is not from the Microsoft Store. A Microsoft Store App is just a store App.

To show you how this works, choose Microsoft Store App.

Then click the "Select an App" drop down box.

Choose an App from the list available.

Choose Microsoft Edge, (just because we both will have it for the purpose of this demo).

    Then click the Add button.

Then click the Options button on Microsoft Edge.

Select "High Performance" (Nvidia GPU) and click the Save button.

Now Microsoft Edge will always run using your Nvidia Card.

You can now remove Edge if you want as this was just a demonstration of how you add a program to force it to use your High Performance Nvidia graphics card.

When you add a desktop App it is a little different as you have to browse to the file directory of the App and select the executable for the App. But the rest of the process is the same.

I hope this information helps you. If you still feel like your display isn't quite right, then I can help you update your graphics card drivers which may help.

    Kindest regards,

    Neil

Actually, the bit depth of a monitor determines how many different colors it can represent. It's not related to the graininess or smoothness of the image. The bit depth is set at the factory and can't be changed, even if your computer's graphics card is capable of producing images with greater bit depth.

    Hi Neil,

Thank you for your clarification Neil, it now makes sense that it meant 32 bit RGB color depth.

Regarding, the Graphics performance preference, I have now set one of the application that would need a good resolution for to use the Nvidia Graphics card and it seems to be working well!

    Thanks for the solution.
