keyboard not working AFTER boot

Anonymous

A Lenovo ideapad 3 keyboard works during boot. I can enter bootmanager and BIOS and can use the keyboard in BIOS. But after boot the keyboard does nothing. Using the onscreen keyboard I have been able to:

  1. Try to update keyboard driver, but most recent driver was already installed
  2. Uninstalled keyboard and rebooted
  3. Ran SFC /scannow which found and repaired errors
  4. Ran DISM /online /restorehealth which reported no errors
  5. Ran SFC /scannow again
  6. Reset Windows
  7. Windows update is configured to update automatically and a check did not find any updates
  8. Lenovo vantage checked the system and installed a new BIOS

Still keyboard does not work after reboot. Since it works well during reboot I assume there is no keyboard hardware error.

What should I do next?

Hi Marc. I'm Greg, Independent Advisor, Volunteer Moderator and 10 year Windows MVP here to help you.

I notice you were advised to go into Safe Mode and you said you did that, but nothing was mentioned about what you should do when you get there which is critical. Safe Mode is a platform to use to perform repairs, not a repair itself.

I wanted you to the have the actual list of repairs to try when such a situation arises so you don't have to take it to a repair center again unless none of these help:

Use whichever method works in this link to get into Repair Mode so you can do the necessary repairs or do a Reset: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&...

Easiest is to force shutdown by holding in the power button twice until it starts into Repair Mode. Once in the Repair Mode try the numbered steps below.

It may be necessary to create bootable media on another PC to access Advanced Startup Options to try repairs, a Reset or do the Clean install. The bootable media has it's own set of files so that repairs or Reset might work better, doesn't require a password, and you'll have it to if necessary do the vastly superior Clean Install.

To create Windows 10 Installation Media on another PC install Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/pl-pl/windows-10/m.... Uncheck the box for Recommended Settings to choose the exact version and bit rate for the target PC only.

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key given here: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&...

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, on second screen choose Repair Your Computer, then Advanced Troubleshoot Options, then:

    1. Try a System Restore,
    2. If that fails try Uninstall Updates as far back as necessary to see if this was caused by an Update,
    3. Open the Command Prompt to:

    a) run System File Checker: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&...

    b) run a full Disk Check: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&...

    c) trigger Safe Mode with Networking (for internet) or Safe Mode following https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&... to roll back Updates & Drivers in Windows Update History, update your drivers from the PC/Motherboard manufacturer's website and diagnose further:

    https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&...

    1. Everything else possible to get WIndows 10 to start is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...
    2. If those fail then go back to Troubleshoot Options to do a Reset.
    3. If that fails choose Install Now, then Custom Install, then at the drive selection screen delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, click Next to let it create needed partitions and start install - this makes it foolproof. Everything needed to get the best possible Clean Install is here: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&.... It is a better install than any amount of money can buy and a great learning experience that will make you the master of your PC because you will learn what works best and how to apply it with your own hands.
    4. If you have files that aren't backed up you can use the same bootable media to try to rescue your files using these methods: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Do you still remember what changes you made or what happened before you had this problem with the keyboard?

You might want to consider getting your device back to an earlier point in time where everything was fine. Follow the steps on this link to do a System Restore: https://support.microsoft.com/article/51391d9a-....

Yesterday my wife could enter her password when starting Windows. After that she could not use the keyboard anymore. She does not install software. Apps and features show all apps with install date 20/07/2021. The 50 apps look like normal windows and lenovo apps. Programs and features has 8 programs all from Microsoft, Lenovo and McAfee.

There are 2 restore points both dated 20/07/2021. Remember I did a reset last night. This explains why all dates of apps, programs and restore points are from this night.

Sorry. I forgot to mention tbis in the list of what I already did. I did reboot in safe mode and also clean boot. I used also both my account which is linked to a microsoft account and also a local account. All these things did not solve the problem.

Hi, I'm Bianca, an Independent Advisor.

To narrow down the source of the problem, please start Windows in Safe mode. There are a few ways on how to do it and you can choose on how to proceed. Follow the steps here: https://support.microsoft.com/article/92c27cff-...

Once in Safe mode, see if you have the same problem. Let me know what happens after. We'll proceed on how it goes.
