Black screen with cursor. Tried to fix using repair mode but now it won't let me into repair mode.

Hi,

I've had this computer for about a year now and it has been working perfectly fine until the latest auto update. When I booted up my computer this morning it booted as usual, but then I was greeted to a black screen with a cursor. I looked up what to do and a lot of the tutorials tell you to try shortcuts like Ctrl + Alt + Del to open task manager but no matter what I tried, nothing would open. I eventually found a tutorial that shows you how to use command prompt to restore software files from the automatic repair troubleshooting menu. After alot of trial and error, nothing seemed to be working. I couldn't even boot my computer from all 3 types of safe modes without the black screen with cursor bug. I also tried uninstalling the most recent quality update which did virtually nothing as far as I'm concerned. Currently, everytime I try to access the automatic repair menu by restarting my computer at the sight of the windows logo 3-4 times it appears with Error code: 0xc0000001 after the first restart. Sometimes its a different error like "Your PC couldn't turn off properly". I have been trying to access this menu as I am curious as to see if uninstalling the most recent "feature update" to see if that does anything. I've been scratching my head the past few hours because I feel like I'm out of options. Someone pls help me

Thank you

Hi LiamKena, I am Rob, an Independent Advisor not affiliated with Microsoft and a 15 time and dual award Microsoft MVP specializing in Windows troubleshooting and Bluescreen analysis. Please remember as independents we are not responsible for the development of Windows or the computer hardware and drivers. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

Since you believe an Update was involved you can use Safe Mode (see below) to remove the update in addition to the other methods below.

Black Screens can be very difficult to resolve since there are no error messages or systematic files to help determine anything to help.

Troubleshoot black screen or blank screen errors <-- read this

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14106/...

You have a Black Screen and not a real BSOD which is a BlueScreen. Though it can be even harder to correct.

    Try this :

Boot into Safe Mode - Start Search type -->Device Manager (find at top)

then expand Display Adapter - Right Click on it and UNINSTALL.

Reboot the computer and hopefully, the BlackScreen will be history.

How to start Windows 10 in Safe Mode <-- EXCEPT, since you can't enter Windows, you will need a Windows 10 disk to use this link's methods. (See below how to make a Windows 10 disk/USB.)

You will need a Windows 10 Repair or Installation disk or USB drive.

You can make a Windows 10 Installation disk with the Media Creation Tool.

Boot to it - Repair - Troubleshoot - Advanced StartUp Options - Restart -

If that works check with your System/Motherboard Maker and/or your video

device maker's support, their online documentation and drivers, and ask in

their forums about any knows issues. And you really should do this first.

    Here to help,

    Hi

    Please try an automatic repair.

    1. Open the Windows 10 download page on another PC and click on Download tool now.
    2. Insert a blank USB drive with at least 4 to 8 GB of space. The USB drive will be formatted.
    3. Run the tool and choose Create an installation medium for another PC.
    4. Select the correct USB drive from the list and proceed.
    5. Wait until it finishes. It may take a long time.
    6. When done, insert the USB into the affected PC and boot from it.
    7. Under the Install now button, click on Repair this PC.
    8. Go to Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>Startup Repair

This will scan and fix any errors with Windows.

    If the repair fails:

    1. Boot from the USB again and follow the same steps. Instead of startup repair, choose Command Prompt.
    2. Type chkdsk /f
    3. Wait until the check runs. You may need to keep it overnight.
    4. This will check and fix the errors.

    If this fails too:

Try recovering from a system restore point (if you created any)

    1. Follow the same steps above and instead of Command prompt or startup repair, choose System restore
    2. Select the restore point and proceed.

If that fails too, you should re-install Windows.

Backup all your data using the xcopy command.

    1. Insert an external drive where you will backup your files.
    2. Open command prompt and type xcopy C: D: /s /e /h /i /c /y Make sure to replace C: with the letter of the drive you want to take backup of. Replace D: with the drive letter of the external drive.
    3. Do this for all the drives in the PC (especially the C: drive, as it will be formatted)
    4. Then install Windows using the Install now button when you boot from the USB.
