"You can't sign in to this device right now" message

Hello.

About ten minutes ago, when trying to sign-in to my device, I got the message "You can't sign in to your account right now", with the suggestion to check accounts.live.com for support.

This had me very worried, so as soon as I could sign in, I went to my account and checked to see if there was any suspicious activity within the past few minutes. There wasn't, but this still has me very worried.

Why did I get this message twice when trying to sign in? Should I change my password to be on the safe side? (On that note, I did see a lot of unsuccessful sign-in attempts again). Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, what causes it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am worried to sign out and not be able to get back on to my device.

Hi, I'm Bianca, an Independent Advisor.

I suggest that you run the System File Checker to check if there are corrupted files which might be causing this problem.

To run it, follow these steps:

Open Command Prompt and Run it as administrator. Select Yes to make changes on the prompt where it will ask for changes to be made to your PC.

    Type this command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    Then press Enter

Wait for the message that says "The operation completed successfully."

    Type another command: sfc/scannow

    Then press Enter

After the verification is complete, restart your PC and see if you have the same problem.

Please let me know if this does not work or if you've tried this already. I might have another possible solution to try after this one.

Hi, and thank you again for the suggestion!

I signed in to my device this morning with no problems; it seems the message I got yesterday was an error? I did some looking around and it seems to happen every so often to people?

I'll keep your advice in mind though; thank you for your help!

Hello, and thank you for a fast reply.

I should also mention that over the past few days, I've noticed that on my first startup of the day, there's often a black screen before it gets to the sign-in screen. I made a post about it here https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/black-screen-on-startup-no-cursor/c389779c-d110-4d3c-ae3a-b7479b53e921

I don't know if the two are connected at all, but would it also help if I disable fast startup as people in that other thread mentioned?
Also, this all started after Windows did some updates last week, one of them being a feature update (21H1). I don't know if that has anything to do with both this or the black screen issue.

Hi, I'm Bianca, an Independent Advisor.

To narrow down the source of the problem, please start Windows in Safe mode. There are a few ways on how to do it and you can choose on how to proceed. Follow the steps here: https://support.microsoft.com/article/92c27cff-...

Once in Safe mode, see if you have the same problem. Let me know what happens after. We'll proceed on how it goes.
