Touchpad not working on DELL-Inspirion 3542

Hello,

I'm running Windows 10 on my Dell laptop, Inspirion 3542, x86 i3-4030 CPU

My touchpad is not working since I updated to windows 10. Previously I was running windows 7 and the touchpad worked fine. But after upgrading my PC to Windows 10 using the windows update tool, now my touchpad is inaccessible.

In device manager, there is no device listed in "Mice and other pointing devices", same with "Human Interface Devices"

In mouse properties, no device is listed in the hardware tab.

I've tried downloading the specific driver from the DELL support website, but when I try to install the driver, it says "No need to install Synaptics pointing device drivers."

Also, my Windows is up to date. I also installed the drivers listed under "View optional updates" in Windows update.

I have 3 unknown devices in Device Manager under Other Devices. Previously there were 7. After updating, now it's 3.

Now I have a USB laser mouse it is working fine.

Also, I've tried an application from Iobit named Driver Booster updated 16 drivers from it but to no avail...

Please assist, any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks for replying Virginia,

I was using Windows10 pro for education 1909

I tried many things, but in the end, installing WIndows10 pro-1857 solved the problem.
I guess downgrading helped or changing from an education version to another...

    now everything is fine.

    Hey, thanks for assistance Carlo...

But sadly it didn't worked. As I mentioned earlier, I don't have any device or driver listed, but when I connect my USB mouse "HID-Compliant Mouse' shows up, on removing this mouse, it disappears but still I tried uninstalling it and USB Mouse was not working, but I guess it's the driver for USB Mouse and not for touchpad driver.

I also mentioned that I have downloaded the specific driver from the DELL support website (I checked it was the same link as yours) but when I try to install the driver, it says "No need to install Synaptics pointing device drivers."

Lastly, in my laptop, windows settings, under Devices there is no tab named "Touchpad" There's other options and one for Mouse too. But nothing for touchpad.

Also I can easily handle some technical things so if you know anything (like writing some commands in cmd) tell me so we can make this touchpad work...

It's been a week now and this is getting old 😸

    Take Care,

    Regards

    Sameer_F.

Hello, I’m Virginia, I have 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems. May I ask which Windows 10 build are you running - 1909, 2004, 20H2 or 21H1?

Is there a new Touchpad entry under device manager & under Start>Settings>Devices?

The newer Elan/Synaptics driver seems to break the touchpad settings so that you cannot turn the touchpad on/off or use various scroll options.

Try installing the Microsoft precision touchpad driver:

https://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/66163/how-to-in... This will add extra touchpad options under Settings>Devices>Touchpad.

Please do not download any repair tool which may be offered by this site other than the ones I mention/recommend.

Thoroughly research any product which is mentioned here before you decide to download and install it.
