Lost Word 2007 Document after power outage.

I'm using an old copy of Office 2007 in my Windows 10 OS. I spent all afternoon working on a document and as luck would have it a nearby storm temporarily knocked my power out.

I'd had this happen to me once before a couple of years ago and was able to recover the .asd file through the autosave feature. I thought I might have the same luck this time and after a quick google search, attempted the recommended steps to recover the documents.

Steps for Word 2007

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
  2. In the Navigation Pane, click Save.
  3. In the AutoRecover file location box, note the path, and then click Cancel.
  4. Close Word.
  5. Open the folder that you noted in step 3.
  6. Look for files whose names end in .asd (AutoRecover files).
  7. Sort the files according to date modified
  8. If you find the Word document that you are looking for, double-click it to open it.
  9. It will prompt you to choose file to open with .........choose word file
  10. Save it immediately.

The issue is, when I open the AutoRecover file location folder, the document isn't in there?

The rub is, that I had never performed an "initial" save of the document, which I suspect is my problem?

Am I out of luck?

It sounds like you're probably out of luck, but let me make two recommendations for the future:

    1. Whenever you work on a long document, don't wait until you're finished to save it; save it every few minutes.
    2. Invest in an inexpensive UPS device (I recommend those by APC), so you can save anything you're working on whenever the power goes out.
