error when moving Page File off of C:\ [Windows 10 Pro version 21H1 (os build 19043.1165)]

I am critically low on drive space on C:. as part of my trying to make more space availible, I am trying to move the page file from C:\ to D:. but after rebooting, I am shown the following message after login:

I looked at the advanced system menu for the pagefile, and while it did create the pagefile on D:\ it also created the "temporary" page file on C:\ as well. Is moving the pagefile off of C:\ no longer allowed in windows?

erm... one last question, now that I am turning the dumps back on, which option is best to use if I need help in the future, and a dump is needed?

    • Small memory dump (266k)
    • Kernel memory dump
    • Complete memory dump
    • Automatic memory dump
    • Active Memory dump

I would assume it is Complete memory dump, unless you tell me different. only problem with that option is the file will be as large as my amount of RAM (16 Gb) and I only have a 1 Mbps upload speed.

With the important caveat that I don't know that this applies to Windows 10 (although it does for Vista through at least Windows 7), Windows requires a small "pagefile" on the system drive to accommodate minidumps even if the actual pagefil.sys is moved to another drive.

See the discussion here (not just the marked answer): https://superuser.com/questions/237813/how-can-i-move-the-page-file-to-another-physical-disk-location and this MS article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/archive/blogs/ntdebugging/how-to-use-the-dedicateddumpfile-registry-value-to-overcome-space-limitations-on-the-system-drive-when-capturing-a-system-memory-dump

I'm not sure why there's a Recovery partition on D which is a data drive. If it was previously a WIndows drive then it needs to have been wiped with Clean Command to get rid of boot code, then reformatted as a data partition. Or you can remove the Recovery partition now using EISA command here: https://techjourney.net/delete-and-remove-prote...

But since this could be involved in why the Virtual Memory folder won't function there, I would move the data off D, run Diskpart Clean Command to get it cleanest of all OS code in boot sector and partition table:

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/248980/how-to-p...

Then try moving the VIrtual Memory file there as shown here:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

there is no room for another partition on the drive, even if I wanted one, I am very well versed in manipulating partitions and even recovering data from corrupted partitions. the primary drive C:\ is an itty-bitty 256gb SSD that has only 30 Gb free space left. my D:\ is a 1tb HDD it has 320 Gb free on it. looking at my disk management screen is useless for what i am trying to do, but here it is anyway.

thanks to my cleanup efforts the freespace has gone from 20Gb's to 76Gb but this number is constantly going up and down, triggering low space alerts. My freespace goal is roughly 90Gb. my experience with this system tells me that that is an optimal amount of free space for windows to play around in.

as for those other links about moving the swap file and so on. that is exactly what i did. I used the windows menus to change the settings. I have been familiar with the basics of swap file settings in windows dating back to windows 3.0

I have already moved ALL reassign-able user folder and even some of the windows store apps off of C: and onto D:\ so those links are useless to me as well.

Hi Cybot. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP specializing in installation, performance, troubleshooting and activation, here to help you.

If you can move your paging file to another partition on the same drive, I can probably help you borrow space from it using a tool like free Partition Wizard Extend feature which lets you move space around between partitions whether they are adjacent or not. See here: http://partitionwizard.com/video-help/extend_pa...

Please post a screenshot of Disk Management, which I read like a doctor reads X-rays. Follow the steps here so I can see everything needed to advise you: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/foru...

I should be able to spot the problem for you, and give you other suggestions to make space, like moving User folders off of C: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-move-default... or even move Apps to another drive if it is of comparable speed (otherwise they will lose speed, while files don't): https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/81680-move-...

Here is how to move a Virtual Memory Paging file ;to another drive: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-move-virtual...

Here's how to opimize Virtual Memory:

Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
