Windows Explorer periodic High CPU Usage when it is opened

Hi guys,

I've been dealing with this High CPU usage, which lasts a few seconds and falls back to normal values almost immediately. I have noticed when this happens, desktop icons flashing, like it is resetting and immediately back to normal. Also, when using the Windows explorer application, when this event occurs, the window freezes saying "Windows explorer (Not Responding)" for a few seconds, after which it flashes and its back to normal, before the same thing cycles and happens again. You notice the issue big time, when trying to rename a file/document, when you start typing the new name it freezes and resets to the old name as if I hadn't done anything, I must wait and type the name so quick before the cycle gets me and resets my effort.

I've been trying to tackle and find fix, but nothing has fixed it as of now. I've listed below some of the ways I have tried to find the problem and fix the issue.

  • Tried contacting Microsoft support for help, they always do the same thing, rest my PC, and to no avail I only lose my data, but the issue is not fixed. Sometimes I feel like, Microsoft support agents only know one thing, reset the PC.
  • My laptop is up to date with all updates
  • My BIOS and drivers are up to date
  • I tried running the "sfc" and "chkdsk" scans The most recent sfc scan showed me an error with the below file, and it said it restored it successfully; Repairing file ??\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OneDrive.lnk from store
  • I tried running malware scans from "Malwarebytes" didn't find anything wrong
  • I tried running Microsoft Safety Scanner, it too didn't detect any malware.
  • Searched online for recommended fixes, tried almost everything, including disabling non-Microsoft services.

On a personal note, I think it's an issue caused by OneDrive.

The Laptop I am using is a Lenovo-ideapad 320

Please advise, this issue is hampering my productivity.

Found the Issue

It was caused by the Color Accent Pick set to Automatic - which you can access through personalization settings.

Hope this helps!

    Good Day Abdullah,

My name is Carlo, I am also using Windows 10 pc and community member like you.

Let us work together to sort this out.

Please try to scan your computer using the free version of Malwarebytes scanner to check if there are malwares or rootkits running in your system.

    Here's the link to download.

    https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/10789

Once downloaded and installed open the app and perform a scan , check for malware infection.

Once the scan is done , check for updates and install any updates available.

    -Press Windows key + X

    -Go to Settings

    -Click Update and Security

-Check for Updates and install any updates available.

Once the updates are all installed, restart your computer and check the task manager.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

    Sincerely,

    Carlo T.

Hi Abdullah, I'm Benedict. I'm here to help you.

Have you already tried to perform a Clean boot troubleshooting to see if there are Startup apps or non-Microsoft services causing the said issue? If not, please do so. To perform a clean boot in Windows, follow the steps here: https://support.microsoft.com/topic/da2f9573-6e...

After the clean boot troubleshooting, start your PC again in a normal start up (the link above also gives the steps on how to exit from clean boot state, see the section "Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting").

If the issue persists in a clean boot state, try doing a repair install of Windows 10. This process will install Windows 10 over the existing installation of Windows 10 on your system drive, using your USB installation media or ISO file (detailed instructions are given in the link below). Performing this can repair corrupted/broken operating system files while preserving your personal data/files, system settings, and installed apps including third-party apps. Go to the link below and follow the steps provided by Shawn Brink, a trusted Windows Insider MVP.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repai...

    Please see if that helps.

    Regards,

    Benedict P.
