Virus scan failed suddenly started on all browsers

Somewhere between Sept 30 and Oct 3, I started receiving the virus scan failed message on both google chrome and microsoft edge.

It looks like file fully transfers and then is scanned.

Only using microsoft defender as an active antivirus.

Windows problem reporting is triggered.

Steam downloads games just fine (assume GOG galaxy does as well), thus it's more than likely a browser issue.

Tried multiple file tyes, including files that were downloaded just fine prior to Sept 30.

Some major changes that occured were multiple Security intelligence updates for microsoft defender antivirus, and update KB3023057.

Attempting to access policies through regedit under the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Attachments does not work, as it seems the filepath stops at Policies.

Since the issue I have attempted to both edit the policy, updated chrome, turned off microsoft defender, and updated Windows, all to no avail.

    Hi MarekHanel -

I'm Jerico T., I understand that you're having some issues right now and I'd be more than happy to help you today.

Prior to the issue, is there any recent changes on your computer? Please try to perform SFC scan.

Perform SFC Scan and Repair Windows Image

-This process will perform scan for any corrupted system files or integrity violation and will attempt to repair it along with the Windows Image.

    1. Open command prompt with administrator access
    2. Type each command below and wait until scan is completed.

    sfc /scannow

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Quick note: While the command is running, it's expected to see the process stuck at 20 or 40 percent. After a few minutes, the process will complete successfully.

Once you complete the steps, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool will connect to the Windows Update servers to download and replace any damaged files in the local image for Windows 10 as necessary.

    1. Close the command prompt.

Feel free to reach back if you need any further assistance.

Hope this help. Have a good day.

    Thank you,

    Jerico T.

    Hi MarekHanel -

Thanks for the update. I see, do you have other computer/device that we can use to download the ISO file? If no, then please try to perform a reset on your computer while keeping your personal files. Click the link below for the steps.

    Hi Jerico T.,

Looks like method 1 failed. Unfortunately the creation of an ISO file requires the download of a Microsoft media creation tool, which is not possible via browser. I do have a windows 10 installation cd that came with my pc, I'm unsure if that's what the ISO creation will make.

    Thank you,

    Marek Hanel

    Hi MarekHanel -

Thank you for your response. I see, then please try to perform the methods below.

Method 1: Create a new user profile

    • We will try to create new user profile to check if the issue happens on all windows users on your computer or just isolated on the current profile that you're using.
    1. Open the command prompt with elevated access (Administrator Access)
    2. Type the below command and hit enter every after command.

    net user "account name" /add

(change the "account name" to any name that you preferred)

net localgroup administrators "account name" /add

(change the "account name" with the name that you put in the first command)

    1. Close the command prompt and switch to the new user.

Check if the same issue occurs on the new user profile. If in case the issue still persisted on the new user profile, sign back in to your old user profile and perform method 2.

    Method 2: In-Place Repair

    • In-place repair/upgrade or repair reinstall is a process of re-installing Windows without touching any of your applications or personal files. In this way if there's any data corruption, damaged system files or missing system files on your computer, this repair will fix or repair them.

To start we need to download an ISO file of Windows 10 and save it to your computer. Please follow the instruction on the link below to create an ISO file

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402819...

After the ISO is created, follow the instructions on the link below created by PaulSey, Microsoft Agent, on how to perform repair install on your computer.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

This process will take some time to complete so you need to be very patient in waiting until the process completes. Once done , restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

Please keep me posted for the result.

    Regards,

    Jerico T.

    Hey Jerico T.,

I followed through with the scans, and there were corrupt files detected during sfc/scannow. However, after running all scans and allowing the repairs to take place, the problem still persists. Any other suggestions on what may help?

    Thank you,

    Marek Hanel
