Mouse randomly freezing for some seconds

Anonymous

From 3 days my mouse (Logitech M100 - non wireless), plugged-in in a USB port, started randomly freezing for a bunch of seconds and I do not know how to fix it, even if I followed almost every tutorial and I also contacted the Windows support directly but without any actual result.

My OS is Windows 10 Home 21H1 (reinstalled yesterday through the "MediaCreationTool21H1" downloaded by the support), running on a "AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core Processor 3.40 GHz", "16,0 GB RAM" and a "GT640 2GB".

I think the problem started from nothing as some hours before I only remember to have downloaded a well known software and it was also scanned by the Antivirus (I have already used this software with others PCs and I can assure it isn't causing the problem as I also tried to completely unistall it and also clear the remaining folders, rebooting the computer, but nothing changed). The Antivirus is always running with max protection and every file is weekly scanned.

I am starting to think it is a Windows problem and all the needed upgrades were already had been installed a while ago but I also reintalled them today.

Nothing to do with other tips or tutorial as I checked the drivers, unistalled the mouse, tried different USB ports, opened the mouse, tried other mice, did the 2 CDM lines to clear errors, deactivated Cortana from the Task Manager and nothing changed. At one point I also thought it was because of the worn mousepad and so I changed it too but the problem persists.

I don't know what to do anymore because it is a bit frustrating to move the mouse and having this random freezes, I noticed that when PC is just turned on it has less freeze then when it is used from more time (but it doesn't really depend on that, the problem is always here) but all the processes are under the 10%.

Is there anything I am missing out?

Hi Fillipo. I'm Greg here to help.

I will give you everything that works to troubleshoot a mouse. Even if you have tried a step please do it over in sequence. I will be standing by to help as needed.

Try all other ports on the PC, often the front and back will have different USB controllers

When did it last work correctly? What has changed since then? Is there a System Restore point to roll back to before then? http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

Change the batteries if wireless, try another USB port, reset mouse from button on bottom if available.

Try the mouse in another PC to isolate if it's the mouse or Windows causing this.

Try another mouse in this PC to confirm if Windows is the problem.

Access the Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, choose the Mouse, then Driver tab. First try Update this Driver > Automatically, then Roll Back if available. If not choose Uninstall button, restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.

If this fails then from Device manager try uninstalling the USB controllers, restart PC to reinstall. First program the power button to Shut down the PC at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power button does so you can do the restart from it.

Is there mouse software installed in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features? Uninstall it to see if the problem stops. This is unneeded bloatware.

Adjust the mouse settings in Settings > Devices > Mouse, checking all settings including the Additonal Mouse Options box - check Settings on all tabs.

Report back all results for possible other things to try.

To check if Windows is causing this you can also go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

Update your drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

If nothing else helps you can run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows in about an hour while saving your files, apps and most settings, solves many problems while also bringing it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Hi Greg.

    • The other ports work in the same way but when using the front ports the problem is way more noticeable
    • I could try a System Restore but I think I have no back-up. The last time the mouse worked correctly was 4 days ago and then it started randomly freezing. Today even the keyboard had the same problem for twice: I pressed a key (R key) and for a bunch of times it gave no response and after some seconds the whole keyboard gave no response for a second.
    • I tried resetting it, I opened it to clean it and check if the components were intact and everything was fine. It's not wireless and it doesn't have any software.
    • Tried both using 2 other mice and pluggin the mouse I have always used into another pc. The two mice have the same problem while my mouse, plugged-in in another pc, works perfectly fine.
    • All possible drivers are updated and were reinstalled yesterday.
    • All the passages have been re-done by myself but they were already done ny the Windows' assistance as I gave him the permission to enter my pc with the CTLR + Windows + Q command.

I don't know what else could couse this problem.
    Thank you

Already opened another topic, the problem wasn't solved at all.

Everyday I spend hours looking how to fix the mouse freezing because while software are open it increases.

I cannot work with it and I tried every single thing plus I went to my technician and nothing to do.

Any new fix or update? Mouse freezes at least twice per minute and it doesn't work from 1 to more seconds, rarely even 5 seconds.

    Thank you

    Hi again Filippo.

If the problem happens with another mouse then that rules out the mouse. The problem must be with Windows, an app conflict or the account. I gave steps that should check over all of these to find and fix the problem.

Please continue with the steps I gave and report back results.

System Restore is a simple time machine that goes back to a point before the problem started. Do you know when this was and is there a Restore point then?

The steps lead up to a Repair Install which reinstalls Windows while saving your files and apps in place, brings it up to the latest version by the most stable method, takes about an hour and resolves most problems, as detailed here: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/fix-windows...

But you always need to have your files backed up if you value them at all, because a hard drive can die at any time without notice.

The safest and most reliable backup method is to sort your files into their User Folders (Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, etc) and periodically drag or copy them to external or another hard drive. See tips for copying large groups of files here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2086566/the-many...

Then have one other Cloud backup so your files are safe from ransomware, fire and theft and easily accessible via the internet just like email. Some suggestions to help ease into this habit:

You can drag or copy 5gb for free into OneDrive app to store in the cloud where they are safe from fire and theft. You can also choose to sync the Desktop, Pictures and Documents folders (only) in OneDrive app Settings > Backup for real time backup. More here:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/116029-turn...

If you install Google Drive, you can use their new Backup to choose ANY User folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) to sync up to 15g for free to their cloud in real time. You can also drag/copy selected files into Drive folder. More here:

    https://www.cnet.com/how-to/get-started-with-go...

Besides your files you should back up a System Image to use in place of reinstall in 20 minutes. The best free alternative is Macrium:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-ref...

There is an easy way to mount the System Image to extract files if needed. Some prefer to move their User folders off of C to make the image smaller and so they stay current if you need to re-image C. Here's how to move User folders to a data partition you create:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-move-default...

This way if Windows ever becomes irreparable you can restore C in 20 minutes from recovery media, and your files will be current and safe in their own separate partition. If they are left on C they will be dated from when the image was taken.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
