TrustedInstaller Takes Over System, And Causes Various Glitches.

I've had this problem 2 times in the past, and I don't know how this happens, but sometimes I install W10, and a few days later, TrustedInstaller takes full ownership of my system, and then things stop working.

The things that stop working are Mail, Search, Taskbar Calendar, to name a few. If I click them, they just automatically close. Then, another problem happens, is that I can't access the C: drive anymore, because TrustedInstaller takes over it on it's own. So I finally remembered how I fixed it, was to take back full control of the C drive. But I'm trying to figure out why this happens!?

Also, I even updated to Windows 11 during the time when I "forgot" how to fix the problem, and it also carried over to Windows 11, which means, there's something seriously wrong with permissions and TrustedInstaller.

    @Greg Carmack - Windows MVP 2010-2020

"Are you operating an Administrator account? What changes or modifications are you making, if any?

When you reinstall are you wiping all partitions off the hard drive or SSD which is the definition of a "Clean" install, with all other drives unplugged, selecting the Unallocated Space and then clicking Next to let Windows create and format the needed partitions - which makes it foolproof?"

Yes, I'm the administrator. Fresh install using the Windows 10 .iso from Microsoft's official site. Formatted and cleaned disk using fdisk in a command prompt during ISO USB boot then letting Windows create it's primary partition.

"Next time you install do this gold standard Windows 10 Clean Install which compiles the best possible Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy:*http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...*. Read over it first, take notes, ask back any questions so you're prepared."

I'm aware of this process. I've created many PXE systems to install Windows, and Linux OS's to multiple laptops and PC's at once at my previous institution, and have worked help desk for over 20 years. This problem is pertaining to my home systems, where I try to keep "work out." However, this is not a problem I encounter often, just once in a blue, as every year or two, I like to do a fresh reinstallation of Windows for security purposes and for a fresh start. However, this problem comes along usually when a new update comes around. And if you think I'm the only person with this problem, just search for "Windows taskbar calendar does not open," "search does not work in Windows 10/11," "windows mail crashed upon opening," as all of those problems are linked with this problem, and it has to do with privilege's regarding TrustedInstaller, and/or simply changing UAC to a lowered security level (to get rid of the horrid black background when installing non-Microsoft signed apps, like FileZilla for example.)

"You can even adapt it for Windows 11 as it's worked the same since Windows 7 for millions of consumers who have never come back to report another problem."

I honestly wouldn't touch Windows 11 with a 10 (pun intended) foot pole. Especially since I've been an insider for the past year, and now my previous OS is held hostage to the outdated dev version due to Microsoft's negligence being that you cannot do a direct install to the public release if you're using a developer version... But that's a story for another time.

Anyway, this thread is getting convoluted with mostly useless information between the both of us. Let's get back to TrustedInstaller, which is the issue, because once I changed the file permissions from TrustedInstaller to my Administrative account, which I use as my main and only account, all my issues were gone. Let's talk about that, since you're a Microsoft MVP, I'm wondering if you can tell me and thousands of other people why this is happening.

    Look forward to your response.

P.S. I just made a thread about this with another account, and someone else recently is also having the same issue.

If you want to complain to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. But Microsoft will not even see it here because this is a tech forums where we are mostly volunteers trying to help solve your problems.

Are you wanting fixes for the problems or just to know what is causing them?

Besides quality of the install which determines everything in Windows 10, I would also suspect modifications of Windows. Are you doing many of these? Each one compounds instability. You will often run up against Trusted Installer when you try to rename or modify System Files, and may corrupt it if you try to get around it.

Trusted installer is the owner of System Files on C. If it's circumvented it can cause System Instability until it's restored. More about this here:

You can most thoroughly go over Windows using this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

Hi Za. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Are you operating an Administrator account? What changes or modifications are you making, if any?

When you reinstall are you wiping all partitions off the hard drive or SSD which is the definition of a "Clean" install, with all other drives unplugged, selecting the Unallocated Space and then clicking Next to let Windows create and format the needed partitions - which makes it foolproof?

Next time you install do this gold standard Windows 10 Clean Install which compiles the best possible Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.... Read over it first, take notes, ask back any questions so you're prepared.

You can even adapt it for Windows 11 as it's worked the same since Windows 7 for millions of consumers who have never come back to report another problem.

This is because everything in Windows 10 is dependent upon the quality of the install, especially Version Updates which will choke on lesser quality installs, and there is no possibility of problems if you stick ONLY with the steps, tools and methods in that tutorial. Avoid all modifications! Monitor each app and Update installed to try to isolate the cause.

It is also one of life's great learning experiences that will permanently make you the master of your PC because you will learn everything that works best and how to keep it that way.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
