I came from Win 7 and can't figure out how to do this without using a mouse. Haven't been successful with an internet search. Any advice appreciated. TY

    Hi JasWV,

Good day! This is Jhakesong and I will be happy to assist you with this.

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience. Here's how you can highlight a text in windows 10 just by using your keyboard.

    1. Go to the starting point of the text you want to highlight
    2. Hold down the shift key.
    3. While the shift key is held down, press the right arrow key to highlight the text going to the right side.
    4. Once you have covered the text you want to highlight, let go off the shift key.

Note: If you want to highlight a whole line of text, move to the starting point, hold down the SHIFT key, press the END key from your keyboard then let go of the SHIFT key.

Let me know how it goes. Have a great day!

    Hi JasWV,

Thank you for getting back. I appreciate the additional information. If you are mainly copying, highlighting text from a webpage, you will need to have a cursor for my suggestion to work. You can make it appear by turning ON a feature called "caret browsing".

To turn that ON, Press F7 from your browser (Chrome or Edge). You will be asked for a confirmation if you want to turn ON caret browsing. Confirm it.

Once turned on, click your mouse once on a text in a webpage, you will see a flashing cursor. You can position that anywhere in the text. Then to start highlighting, hold down the SHIFT key and since you dont have arrow keys its going to be hard to select a word. You can do SHIFT + End key but that will select an entire line of text.

It would be better to double click a word if you need to select one word only. May I also know what is the model of your computer? I'll have a look and check if there is an alternative to its arrow keys.

Thank you, again...most helpful. I did re-try your original suggestion and it does seem to work. Of course, it is more tedious than simply using a mouse, but it does work. I will often use a mouse, too, when possible.

When I have a chance, I will also try this other method you describe and see what happens. This is a Dell Inspiron. I wish there were references to consult, but there are none. Dell support didn't help mostly due to a language barrier. I may call the vendor on occasion and see what they recommend, if anything. I am sure I am behind with this technology, using Win 10 now for the first time, jumping from Win 7.

    Much appreciated.

Thank you for the response. First thing, this Dell keyboard does not have arrow keys that resemble an old keyboard. The machine was purchased new two days ago. Next when I follow your directions, using text that I am now typing, your method does seem to work, allowing me to cut and paste.

But, I often cut and paste text from random web sites, for whatever reason, perhaps paste into a search window, and the highlighting does not work at all. When using the mouse with the laptop it works fine. Guess I will keep experimenting and see what happens. If it does not work outside of a text window for typing, that would be a major flaw IMHO.

    Thank you, again.
