I have removed a printer from devices and find I cannot use the same name on a new printer device. because the printer I removed had a share on it. I have not been able to find the old printer, although when I display printer properties to print a test page I am given the choice of the original printer name and the new printer name (which includes (Copy 1). please help! Murray

it was not a share problem at all! I used a Print and Scan Doctor from HP, which told me that the LaserJet Pro M12w needed an update. Once installed the downloaded item ran to extract the software to be installed. but where did go? The answer I found in Community post of 2018 to say that was on the C drive and was called LJPM11_M13_Full_Solution. Find and then open it, and look for hpsetup.exe. Run that and you will reinstall the printer.

That was an exercise in frustration, to say the least.

    Hello MurrayMuspratt-Rouse.

I'm Daniel, a Microsoft user like you. It is a pleasure to help you today. I know how frustrating it can be for you, but I will do my best to help you :)

I understand you are having trouble removing the old printer.

I did some research and found a walkthrough that might help you with that.

    The steps are:

Fix: Unable to install printer. There is already another printer with that name

In most cases, this error message appears due to a reference to the printer name in the Windows registry.

Therefore, follow the steps below to remove the registry entry that references the printer name.

    1. Right-click the Start button and click Run.
    2. In the Run Command window, type regedit and click OK.
    3. On the Registration screen, navigate to the Printers folder located in the following location.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Control / Print / Printers

    1. In the Printers folder, right-click the registry key with the Name of the printer you were trying to install and click Delete.
    2. Close Registry Editor.
    3. Now open the Run command> type services.msc and click OK.
    4. On the Services screen, right-click Print Spooler and click Stop. Then right-click the print spooler again and click Restart.

After that, try adding the printer again to your computer and you will have no problem installing the printer.

    Hello again Murray.

    Thanks for the updates.

So did you manage to solve it the way you told me? Downloading and updating?

i have followed your instructions, deleted the printer from the registry, and added it back to the printer list. Unfortunately it shows as unavailable. i think that is a problem for tomorrow - i hope it does not mean that the share has caused it.

Many thanks for your help. Have a great day! This always reminds me of when I was working in LA - i used to shop for the week in the safeway next door. The cash register always said "Have a nice day"!
