Pop-up to turn Antivirus on, even though I check settings it's on?

So I randomly had a pop-up on my PC by Windows Defender to turn my antivirus on, yet I go into the settings and it's on. I don't know if this is McAfee, but it's also on too as I checked. Did it maybe mess up and say it wasn't on?

    Hi Friendly,

Defender will not function properly as your Real-Time antivirus program, if another program

is installed. If you want to use McAfee for your real-time protection, you will need to turn on

"Periodic Scanning" in Defender. That places Defender into passive mode. In that mode, it can

be used for scans, but it will not supply real-time protection.

You can find the Periodic Scanning switch on the Virus & Threat Protection screen. Scroll down

to find "Microsoft Defender Antivirus Options" and select it. Turn the switch to "ON" to allow

Defender to function with McAfee installed.

Is McAfee your main Antivirus program? Did you yourself install it, or dit it come pre-installed when you bought your computer?

I use a 3rd party Antivirus (not McAfee) as well, and upon installing my 3rd party Antivirus program Microsoft Defender got automatically disabled.

Personally, I do not use the 'Periodic scanning' feature of Microsoft Defender and it is not enabled.

I once in a while do get a short info to turn Antivirus back on. That happens for me only when there is a major update for my 3rd party Antivirus which needs to restart for that update to take effect. And in these short seconds that Windows Security pop-up occurs. From my experience and in my case these pop-ups can be ignored. Everything is automatically regulated in the background without me having to interfere.

In case McAfee is your main Antivirus program, you should check if it needs to be updated.

In case McAfee came pre-installed, I would suggest uninstalling it. How to remove McAfee products from a PC that runs Windows

    Hi FriendlyGlue486 -

I'm Kevin B., I do apologize for the inconvenience that you're experiencing right now, let me help you sort things out.

Having two anti-malware program On at the same time might cause an issue with the computer. You may only use either Windows Defender or McAfee for security on your computer. Kindly verify if the notification is coming from the Windows Defender or the other anti-malware app that you have.

To ensure that the windows defender is working properly, kindly try to turn the anti-malware software Off and On then restart the computer.

You may also perform clean boot on your computer to ensure that non-Microsoft services are stopped and is not causing the issue with the anti-malware program installed.

    Perform Clean Boot

    • This process will eliminate 3rd party application running in the background of your computer along with services that are not needed to run windows. If there's any conflicting 3rd party application that causes the issue on your computer, this process will stop it.
    1. Open the run box by pressing the Windows Key + R and type msconfig
    2. System Configuration Utility box will open and by default you are on general tab.
    3. On the General tab, click the selective startup and make sure that load system service and load startup items both have checked mark.
    4. Click on services tab
    5. Put a check mark on Hide All Microsoft Services > This is a very important part as if you miss to click on this, computer might not boot properly or permanently and will end up on clean installation.
    6. Once Hide all Microsoft Services have checked mark on it, click on Disable All
    7. Click on the Startup Tab and click open task manager. This will open another window which contains all your startup applications on the administrator account.
    8. Disable all application that you're not using. You can simply just click on them and select disable.
    9. Click OK , Apply and close the configuration utility

Restart the computer and check if the same issue appears

Hope this will help and have a bless day!

    Thanks.
