Why are events in Solitaire Collections adding minutes before I even click the play button?

In all the games, the timer begins once you move a card ... yet, inconsistently, it goes willynilly with the timer. Today, I played a Freecell/Pyramid event and during one of the Medium challenges, I had to walk away for a moment during the commercial > meaning; I hadn't even exited the commercial. When I returned, exited the commercial, clicked play and finished the game. When the results page appeared, it displayed the correct time I took to finish it, but in total time, it added the extra time the commercial was on the screen for. It's done this with one to two challenges during two events in the last 6 days and making it so that I can't leave the computer for any reason at all despite not moving a single card or even exiting a commercial. Don't see any reason at all why a challenge should be adding time from when a commercial remains on the screen for? The exiting solution does not work for me: previous event I hadn't moved a card, but the game did remain on the screen before I exited completely from home screen. When I returned, opened collections and went to the event ... it added the extra 7 or 8 minutes where the game was idle on the screen for. That one I suppose I can somewhat explain away, but certainly not today's. Drivers are updated, so that's not the issue. Anyone else encountering this sort of inconsistent timer issue lately?

Hi Pippa. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you. \

Make sure you are signed into the game and MS Store at top right corner Profile icon. This saves Store games progress.

Do you know when this started? If so See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

Even if you've already tried one of these steps, please do them over in sequence:

    1. Check for game Updates in MS Store Hub (three dots at top right of Store app) > Downloads & Updates.
    2. Run the MS Store apps troubleshooter at Windows Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps.
    3. Try to Reset or Repair the game in Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > [Name of game] > Advanced Options > Reset or Repair. Restart PC.
    4. If that's not enough then uninstall the game from the same place, restart PC, reinstall the game from MS Store Hub (three dots at top right of Store app) > My Library.
    5. If the above steps don't help then go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. Update your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-downlo...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Left restore and reset as final steps, because I didn't want to lose game data nor did I know what security updates were installed, so tried the other steps and things just got worse lol It was due to update KB5005565 that came out on the 14th, but was installed on my computer on the 18th <- same day the issues began. Update creates many issues with apps. Microsoft posted as resolved the same day this was posted and to fix it required a registry add via command prompt which I put in Monday night. Checked with stopwatch alongside the event challenges and all seemed well, with the exception of today's Freecell challenge where total time had an added 39 secs to time that was the time I analysed the board for. No matter. In any case, troubleshooting shows no more a hang and freeze issue ... so, I'll just take it as an issue on Solitaire Collection's side and glitch that it'll just do occasionally. Thank you for your guidance, if it weren't for your suggestions, wouldn't have found the registry add link solution :)

My goodness you're fast! I saw when the notification for this popped up a bit before logging off the computer. So, I want to thank you for your speedy and very concise reply: THANK YOU! It'll probably be a good while until I can figure out which one these solutions works best, since I'll have to test each one of them through several events. Once one proves to be the solution, I'll post and click resolved.

Again, thank you for offering as many possible fixes as you did: it's IMMENSELY appreciated.
