sharing one drive files with hyperlinks

Hi I have copied a folder and three subfolders and all the files in the subfolders to onedrive on my pc.

I wish to use onedrive to share the files with relatives in Australia. However, some of the files are Word files which contain hyperlinks. The hyperlinks open picture files which are also stored within the folders in question.

after copying the files to my onedrive area on my computer I tested the links to check that they all worked and found that they did. However, the links pointed not at the location in onedrive but at my C: drive.

I cannot see how this will work as when my Aussie relations are looking at files on my onedrive the links will not work if for no other reason it will rely on my computer being switched on.

I did consider resetting the hyperlink base in the onedrive files but these changes would I assume be reflected in the files on the C: drive.

I would be grateful for any suggestions as to how I might achieve my goal.

Paddy

    Paddy -

If the pictures are links to your local PC they will not work for OneDrive Sharing. They need to be links to the internet or to OneDrive shared files. I showed you how to make them work by embedding those pictures in Word, and how to test that it does indeed work by opening the link in another browser that isn't signed into OneDrive so you are seeing what your respondents see and not your OneDrive which will show more..

Here's the most complete guides for OneDrive Sharing I find:

    https://cortavo.com/onedrive-file-sharing-begin...

    https://blog.syscloud.com/onedrive-shared-folde...

I hope it helps. Keep asking back questions and I will answer with the best resources I have.

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for looking at my problem. I have looked at the link you supplied and was aware of imbedding pictures. In fact the 50 plus documents do have a few pictures imbedded in them. If I explain a little about what I am trying to do then it may help make my problem clearer.

I am producing a history of my family which I wish to share with my relations. I have produced Word documents for each of the ancestral families' lives with a few pictures in them however as the user reads the document I have set up hundreds of links to things like birth and marriage certificates, which the reader can view if he/she chooses. To include all the pictures in the documents would I felt make the documents all pictures. Everything works fine on my computer but somehow I have to find a way of sharing it.

Having read that I could share files using onedrive I decided to give it a go. So today is really my first experience of it, so please bear with me if I do not understand your advice. I have been searching for some basic guide to onedrive setup and sharing, but have not found an idiots guide which is probably what I need.

I can change the hyperlink base in the word files in the onedrive area so that the links refer to the copies of the file in the onedrive area on windows explorer but I am worried that that change will ripple back to my files on my C drive which I do not want.

Your penultimate sentences is of interest if you could explain it a little further. I have been wondering how I could check whether what I do will work for my relations so it there is a way of simulating this I am very interested.

Any other suggestions regarding the links would be appreciated.

    Thanks again Paddy

Hi Paddy. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP specializing in installation, performance, troubleshooting and activation, here to help you.

You are correct that if the document contains links to files on your PC, these will not be viewable on your relatives PC's unless the picture links are also from OneDrive.

However there should be a way to share via OneDrive a document with pictures embeded in it and not linked to your local PC.

Try this method how to create Word files with pictures embedded in the text:

    https://www.customguide.com/word/how-to-insert-...

Then save the File, right click to generate a OneDrive link, paste it in another browser not signed into OneDrive to see what your relatives will see.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
