Headset microphones not working (3.5mm TRRS single-jack headphones)

The only input device that could be the headset is the Stereo Mix Realtek(R) Audio- if it is not, then my laptop is not recognising microphones at all (I have been testing my laptop with two headsets- one with a single audio jack and USB for LED, and the other with two audiojacks and USB for LED + 2TRS-to-TRRS adaptor). Assuming that the laptop has recognised my headset input device as Stereo Mix, I have set this as the default input device. When selecting "listen", it does not play back anything I say and clearly is not recording environmental sound at all; rather, it plays back any system sound being played, like an echo, as if it is acting as an output instead. In the control panel sound settings, Headset (Realtek(R) Audio) gives audio jack information under playback, but under the input tab Stereo Mix has a black Socket icon with no information at all. It also has the default input icon set as a motherboard, and the troubleshooter has found no issues. Both headsets play sound with no problems. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all audio input/output devices and drivers listed in the control panel, and I have reinstalled Windows 10. My laptop's integrated mic is able to pick up some sound, but barely- it is only amply responsive to the mic being touched itself, so that is not useful in the meantime. Feel free to ask for more information if I have missed anything out or need to clarify, but I really need help getting mics to work on my laptop.

    Hi xoharrz,

I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.

The mic plugged in the TRSS connector on your laptop will show in the same input device of your laptop's integrated mic (not Stereo Mix), but to work, you should set the plugged device as headset on Realtek control panel.

You can find the Realtek control panel on the taskbar, next to the volume icon, if you do not find it there, open the start menu, type control panel and press Enter, set "View by" to "Large Icons" and find the the "Realtek Control Panel" or "HD audio panel" or something similar, with the headset plugged in, double click the connector icon and select the connected device as "Headset"

    Hi Rodrigo,

Thank you for your reply. I have opened the Realtek Audio Console- the only option available is to change the Connector Retasking analogue to Headset- I will include some screenshots to help. The headphones playback device shown controls the audio on the headset, but it does not seem to recognise a mic at all.

Yes, that's the config that I was talking about. Right click the volume icon > Sounds > Recording tab, check the device "Microphone - Realtek" and test the mic comparing the bars, it will be the same device as the integrated mic
