Screen Randomly Fades Blacker, But Then Returns To Normal- An Unpatched Windows 11 Bug?? (Updated 11-06-21)

Hello Microsoft Community!

It's probably been quite a while since I made my last post here. But I'm back with what is in my opinion, a very "interesting" topic of discussion. Be sure to keep reading to get the full details.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

When Windows 11 officially launched on the 5th of October, I of course was quite eager to jump ship & experience the brand new OS from Microsoft! :D Overall, the upgrade experience was pretty smooth & I actually really like how it has matured compared to Windows 10. :) <3 Now, as some of us who like to stay caught up on tech news [Like I do.] know, Windows 11 came out with some loose ends to tie up if you know what I mean; it's not quite perfect, but thankfully, it IS getting better. I had Windows 10 Pro before upgrading which means now I have Windows 11 Pro.

As the title clearly states, I have an issue where my entire display will fade/dim blacker [Not a full black, more like a low contrast type of effect. Really weird IMO.] but then returns to normal within a second-ish. It does not impact performance in any way whatsoever, but it is a little annoying even if it's only for a second or two. There is something that does strike me as a bit peculiar/odd/puzzling/bizarre, etc about this: The issue was NOT present when I had Windows 10, & it was NOT when I upgraded to Windows 11 on launch day either, but it is now after I recently had to do a clean install of Windows 11. I Quite unusual, right? I'm unfortunately unable to capture a screenshot with with this issue being totally random, but thankfully it's not very often. And also, for anyone out there wondering I have a custom setup which you can check out via this PCPartpicker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/83fK68

WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR...:

Now for a list of what I have tried so far in terms of diagnosing/fixing the issue.

  1. As of righting this post today, my system is fully updated including the patch the addresses issues with cetain apps. [KB5008295] Also, for clarification, I'm not on the Windows Insider Program. The OS Build is 22000.282 Version 21H2.
  2. My system also has all the latest drivers including for my GPU. So I can determine that's not a factor.
  3. I have also tried checking for corrupt system files via the SFC /Scannow command in Command Prompt. It has not found any corruption, & when I try running the commands recommended to me anyway, they had no effect after rebooting.
  4. I don't really use any sketchy or dodgy 3rd-party software on my pc. So thankfully, this is not infection-related since I use Microsoft Defender.

When I was chatting with a Microsoft technician just this morning, we were chatting for a while & we both came to the same conclusion/theory that this could very well be an unpatched bug in Windows 11, but we're not entirely sure on that note. She even mentioned that certain laptops & some other systems had this sort of issue inspite of me not seeing any reports or complaints about it online.

Nevertheless, I would like to hear back from you guys on this. Is it an unpatched bug like I believe it is & if so, is there any estimate as to when a fix will become available? Also, have any of you out there been experiencing this or not? And of course, if any of you happen to need additional details or have any questions you wish to ask me, feel free to do so & I will reply back.

Thanks in advance to anyone whom can help! :) Kyle.

Go to Display settings and on brightness have 2 boxes that you will need unselect them.

    • change brightness automatically when lighting changes
    • help improve battery by optimizing the content show and brightness.

I did this and for now solved my issue. I do believe there´s a bug on this sense, but until comes out a patch for this, best way is to keep these selections off.

Well, technically speaking, I know for a fact that my hardware IS supported, but as I stated in the post, I have yet to figure out WHY it's doing this. [Besides, all the components & peripherals that are part of my setup are listed on the PCPartPicker link. Did you even view it?!] The last agent I was with over the phone [Yesterday] wasn't able to do much, but she was quite knowledgeable & we talked for a bit. 1 or 2 days before that, I had a remote support session with a different technician, & he tried a bunch of troubleshooting steps which didn't work. Needless to say, I KNOW that my hardware isn't failing & also, I am well aware that some people ought to wait a few months until the bug/glitches get ironed out with a new release, but I chose to jump ship because I wanted to experience Windows 11 & quite frankly, I won't be switching back to Windows 10 even if it was good. Hope you see my point.

But if any more people have anything else they'd like to add or wish to be of help, I'm all ears since I can't explain why this issue is present after doing a recent clean install & yet when I first upgraded, this issue never happened. Super weird IMO... *scratches head in puzzlement*

    tl;dr

That may or may not be a bug. But what I do know is that every new version of Windows has lots of bugs that need to get worked out. That's just inevitable.

That's why experienced computer users know not to jump on a new version of Windows as soon as it gets released. Instead, it makes more sense to wait at least 6 months to give Microsoft a chance to learn about and work out the early bugs.

With respect to your present issue:

The first thing to do is to find out if your computer's hardware and software are supported on Windows 11. No one knows for sure how unsupported hardware and software will work on a new operating system, and there are no official solutions for unsupported hardware and software.

If everything is supported, the next step is to find out what is causing the problem, for without knowing the cause you won't know how to solve it. The alternative is to throw everything you hear about at a problem, hoping that something might help, and that it will actually solve the problem, rather than just make it go away for a while, and that the procedure won't cause even more trouble now or in the future.

If you're unable to figure out the cause on your own, the next next thing is to show this computer to a professional.
