Sudden ping spikes or "request timed out" when pinging router (Wi-Fi)

Hi everyone,

I've been spending the entire day trying to figure this out and I just can't seem to fix it.
So when I ping my router (Wi-Fi) with "Ping -t 192.168.2.1", I can usually ping it successfully. However, every 10-20 seconds there is a very high ping spike (like 2000ms) or even a "request timed out". After a second or two it continues to ping the router. It can't be the hardware, I've tried it both with a W-LAN Modul PCIe and a WLAN USB - both have the same issue. Thing is though, my laptop can ping with no problem at all. My conclusion is, that it must be a setting or something else that affects my Wi-Fi in some way.
Things I've already tried:

  • Resetting all network settings
  • Updating network drivers
  • Reinstalling network drivers
  • Disabling anti virus as well as firewall
  • This array of commands in CMD
    ipconfig /release <Press Enter>
    ipconfig /renew <Press Enter>
    ipconfig /flushdns <Press Enter>
    ipconfig /registerdns <Press Enter>
    nbtstat -rr <Press Enter>
    netsh int ip reset all <Press Enter>
    netsh winsock reset <Press Enter>

I'm running Windows 10, version 21H2
Any help is much aprecciated!

    Thank you for your reply. For some reason all of the sudden I started to have the ping spikes on all of my devices.
    Turns out the problem was my internet provider. They changed the router and that fixed the problem.

    I'm Jerico T., I understand that you're having some issues right now and I'd be more than happy to help you today.

    Prior to the issue, is there any recent changes on your computer? Let's try to perform the methods below.

    Method 1: Check for Windows Update

    1. Open settings by pressing windows key + I
    2. Select Update and security
    3. It will automatically check for available updates, if not, click the Check for updates button
    4. Download and install available updates, restart your computer if necessary and check if the issue still persist.

    Method 2: Roll-back driver

    1. Open run box by pressing Windows Key + R and type devmgmt.msc then hit enter
    2. Locate and expand Network adapters
    3. Right-click on the driver and select Update driver
    4. Select Browse my computer for drivers
    5. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
    6. Select any older driver from the list and click next
    7. Wait for the process to complete, once completed, restart your computer and check if it resolves your issue.

    Method 3: Perform Clean Boot

    • This process will eliminate 3rd party application running in the background of your computer along with services that are not needed to run windows. If there's any conflicting 3rd party application that causes the issue on your computer, this process will stop it.
    1. Open the run box by pressing the Windows Key + R and type msconfig
    2. System Configuration Utility box will open and by default you are on general tab.
    3. On the General tab, click the selective startup and make sure that load system service and load startup items both have checked mark.
    4. Click on services tab
    5. Put a check mark on Hide All Microsoft Services > This is a very important part as if you miss to click on this, computer might not boot properly or permanently and will end up on clean installation.
    6. Once Hide all Microsoft Services have checked mark on it, click on Disable All
    7. Click on the Startup Tab and click open task manager. This will open another window which contains all your startup applications on the administrator account.
    8. Disable all application that you're not using. You can simply just click on them and select disable.
    9. Click OK , Apply and close the configuration utility.
    10. Restart your computer and check if the issue still persist.
