Removed second monitor. Can't get correct resolution. "Input signal out of range"

I removed a second monitor from my wife's computer. Now the only monitor has the wrong resolution, displays the message "Input signal out of range" and goes to sleep after about a minute.

I can't adjust the resolution to the recommended 1920 x 1080 (it doesn't appear in the menu of options).

I've tried rebooting, uninstalling the driver and rebooting. No action that I can think of has any effect.

Can someone help?

Hi LyleClugg, I am Paulo and I'd like to help.

Do you see the refresh rate when this error appears? (Usually in Hz) If so, can you try changing the setting to that refresh rate and see if this can fix the problem?

    1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings
    2. You will be able to see the information about the connected Monitor as Display 2.
    3. Click on Display Adapter properties for Display 2.
    4. A window for your monitor should open then go to Monitor Tab.
    5. Under the Screen refresh rate, select the required refresh rate you are seeing in the error message.

The refresh rate was already 60 Hz. This was the only option available. I still have the problem. Thanks for trying.

Thanks for your help. I solved the problem before I saw your response. All I had to do was to swap cables. When it worked with two monitors, the remaining monitor was using a VGA connector. I swapped it with the DVI cable that was on the monitor that I removed and the problem was solved. I still don't know why it doesn't work with either cable, but I'm no longer worried about it.

I'm surprised you can even use it. Obviously the driver is lame there. That should never happen. If Windows took control away from the driver because of multi-monitor then Windows did something naughty. But then again, multi-monitor support for all OS's is typically always been roasted bat riddled with lame issues.

You could also try swapping the display out ports as that might trigger something else.

Also too re-adding the other monitor and then backing down to something else in display settings, then remove it, should also do it. Though could take some time to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Sorry, that was the only idea I have in mind. Maybe, someone here has more suggestions to fix the issue. :)
