A USB connected to my laptop and suddenly windows defender blocked Worm:Win32/Gamarue.gen!lnk virus from the pendrive. I formated the pendrive immediately and unplugged.

This is the first time I'm connecting that pendrive to my laptop. Is there any chance that my laptop got affected the virus?

Nb : I didn't even opened the usb drive from file explorer

Hi Basithkle, my name is Ferdinand, I am an Independent Advisor.

There is a small chance that your machine is infected with the virus.

Just to be sure, please try to scan your Windows PC with Windows Defender or your current AntiVirus software. If it comes out as zero or did not detect any then you are all safe.

Or you can perform an extensive scan, follow the steps below.

Lets try downloading the free version of Malwarebytes, it is a freeware that you can use to scan, detect and delete viruses like the one you currently have.

You can download the free version from this link

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Once installed please make a full scan. You may remove this software once you are done with it.

    And follow these additional steps.

Open up the Task Manager by right clicking the task bar, on the Task Manager window click on more details below then look for the open process associated with the pop up, if you cant see it in the process tab go to the details tab and look for that process then if you see right click it and then go to file location and then once you have located the file delete it.

Remove temp files and unwanted addons/Extensions in Chrome and Edge

For Chrome: Open Google Chrome, click the 3 dots at the top right corner click Settings, then on the left pane click Extensions, on the Extensions page look for anything related to the virus then click Remove.

For new Edge: Open Microsoft Edge, click on the 3 dots at the top right corner then click Extensions, then on the Extensions page, look for any add-ons related to the virus then click Remove.

Uninstall an unwanted application in Programs and features,

Go to start type in Control Panel, then go to Programs and then programs and features then go to the list of the programs look for anything unusual or any application that you are not aware right click then uninstall.

Delete Temporary files off Windows 10.

Tap Windows Key then R on your keyboard, on the Run box type in %temp% then press enter.

Once it is up highlight all then delete, if there is a file open that cant be deleted just skip it.

    Hope this helps.

    Simple answer: No

Longer answer: the following Technical information section description for that malware detectin mentions that "If you click the shortcut, a worm detected as Worm:Win32/Gamarue.N will run.", which since you didn't do this means your PC couldn't become infected by this threat simply by inserting the USB in the drive.

    Technical information

    Threat behavior

Worm:Win32/Gamarue.gen!lnk is part of the spreading mechanism used by Worm:Win32/Gamarue, and is usually found on removable drives. The shortcut is used to invoke a Worm:Win32/Gamarue component, which might be detected as Worm:Win32/Gamarue.N.

If you click the shortcut, a worm detected as Worm:Win32/Gamarue.N will run.

See the family description Worm:Win32/Gamarue for more information.

Worm:Win32/Gamarue.gen!lnk threat description - Microsoft Security Intelligence

Also note that when a removable drive is inserted, just like when you browse into a new folder with Windows Explorer, Windows Defender automatically scans any files within that folder (or root of drive) that hadn't been scanned since the last time the PC was powered on. This is to ensure that you may quickly and safely open or execute files within this folder without concern they might contain malware.

That's why you saw the immediate detection and notification display regarding the presence of the generic lnk to Worm:Win32/Gamarue malware, since it was detected during this automatic scan at USB insertion, before it could possibly do any damage or in fact even be accessed by you.

So no, it couldn't have infected your laptop.
