Simultaneous keys are not working properly

Hello, I am facing a problem that I cannot categorize properly. I cannot established whether there is a problem with my keyboard or with my Operating System.

The problem is that pressing Ctrl + Shift + <KEY> on the left size of the keyboard does not work, but pressing Ctrl + <KEY> or Shift + <KEY> works properly. Also, on the right side of the keyboard, Ctrl + Shift + <KEY> works. Also, left Shift with the keys Z, B, N does not work, but the keys z, b, n pressed individually work. On the right side, Shift with the keys Q, ", X, C, V, M, <, >, ? does not work, but the keys pressed individually work properly. Basically, all the keys of the keyboard work when pressed individually, but don't work when combined with Ctrl and Shift.

Is this a software or hardware problem? I also tried cleaning the Ctrl and Shift keys but the problem still persists. I am using Windows 10 Education, version 2004, OS Build 19041.1415.

    Hi CatalinMares -

I'm Kevin B., I do apologize for the inconvenience that you're experiencing right now, let me help you sort things out.

When did the issue started? Are there any recent changes made on the computer before the issue started?

To identify if the issue is software or hardware related, kindly follow the steps below and check if it helps

    • Run the Keyboard troubleshooter

    Press windows key + I

    Click on Systems

    Look for Troubleshoot

    Click on Additional troubleshooter

    Locate and click on Keyboard

    Click on Run the troubleshooter

Follow the onscreen instruction until the process completes

Restart the computer if needed and check if the same issue appears

If the above method did not fix the issue, kindly try to uninstall the keyboard driver on your windows

    Press windows key + r

    Type devmgmt.msc and press enter

Device Manager will pop-up, locate and expand Keyboards

Right click on the keyboard driver which is currently installed on the computer

Select Uninstall and proceed with the uninstallation

Click on Actions on the ribbon and select Scan for hardware changes

Close the device manager and restart the computer

Check if the same issue appears

Hope this will help and have a bless day!

    Thanks.

    Hi CatalinMares -

    Thanks for the response

Kindly create a new user profile on your windows and check if the same issue appears on the new user. This will determine if the issue is profile specific or if the issue appears on any user profile on your windows.

To create new user profile, please follow the steps below

    1. Open the Settings by pressing the Windows Key + I
    2. Click on Accounts
    3. In the left pane menu, click on Family & Other Users
    4. Under other users, click on add someone else on this PC
    5. By default, it will going to ask you to sign in using a Microsoft account, click on the link below which says I don't have this person's sign in information
    6. Click on Add a user without Microsoft account
    7. Fill out a username and click next until completion.

Sign out to the current user and sign in on the new user profile.

Check if everything works fine on the new user.

    Regards,

    Kevin B.

    Hello Kevin,

Thank you again for your promptness.

I tried uninstalling the current keyboard driver and installing the official driver from my laptop manufacturer's official website, but unfortunately the issue persists.

The weird behavior is that today when I started the laptop after leaving it closed overnight, the keys worked perfectly, but after leaving it in standby for some time and reopening it, the issue reappeared.

My laptop is an ASUS F542UN-DM017, and I tried installing this driver: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps\_for\_Win10/ATKPackage/ATK\_Package\_V100061.zip

I don't really know what else to try. It is very weird that right now when I am writing this message, after insisting on pressing the keys that don't want to work they seemed to kind of unlock and started working normally. This is really weird. Ok, now something really weird happened after spamming the keys. None of the keys on the keyboard worked all of a sudden and I noticed an icon named FilterKeys, so I opened it and disabled it, but does not seem to work anyway. The keys work at some times, but at other times they don't. Like now they work normally and in 2 minutes they won't work anymore unless I start spamming them. I am seriously starting to think that my keyboard is dying. Am I wrong?

Thank you so much for your time,

    Catalin

    Hit enter.

Look for system manufacturer and model.

Browse it on your browser together with the keyboard driver.

Uninstall the current driver that you have and install the one that you downloaded.

Restart your computer and see if there is a changes.

Also, kindly check if there is any hotkey application installed on your machine.

    Hello Kevin,

Thank you so much for your response. Unfortunately, none of the suggested methods solved the issue.

The problem appeared today, randomly. I did not install anything on the laptop these days, so I doubt it it an issue related to a recently installed software. At the start of the day everything worked normally and after leaving the laptop in standby for some time the issue showed up.

I tried running the troubleshooter for the keyboard and it did not identify any issue. I already tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting, but that does not help either.

Is this a hardware related problem? Should I get my laptop checked in a service?

    Thank you,

    Catalin
