Taking over the ownership

Hi there,

I'm having an issue with files stores within C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\

Here's the problem:

I would like to play Forza Horizon 5 using my steering wheel - Logitech G27.

To make it work in the desired way, I would like to add this game to the Logitech Profiler - this allows to customize all the settings.

Unfortunately, in order to do it, I need to add ForzaHorizon5.exe file to the profiler. It wasn't easy to find it, because unlike Steam or any other game clients, Xbox application will not show where exactly .exe file is. I managed to locate it here:

C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.624F8B84B80_3.405.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\ForzaHorizon5.exe

The problem is, that when I try to add it to the profiler, it says I don't have a permission even though I'm an administrator.

I know how to change ownership of a file/folder in Windows 10, but I can't do it for this .exe. Ownership is set as system and I can't do anything about it.

Any ideas?

    Hi musazichle

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

The WindowsApps Folder is the most protected folder in a Windows system to ensure the integrity of the Store Apps and Games, and to ensure against malware.

Changing permissions on that WindowsApps folder or any sub-folder will most likely result in all UWP apps and games failing to start on your PC, you would then need to re-install Windows and all Store apps and games.

If you do still want to go ahead and make those changes, at your own risk, try the 'Take Ownership' method provided by Shawn Brink on the link below

Hi! I'm having the same issue running windows 10 latest update (as of 02/04/2022) and that guide is incorrect. I am signed in as administrator and do not have any of the same context items to use as the users pc does in the tutorial, so i cant just right click and take ownership....furthermore navigating to ForzaHorizon.exe>Properties>security when in security making any adjustments such as pressing change permissions (with administrator logo prompt.) fades out all parameters and functions completely denying access. super annoying

Thank you for swift reply, much appreciated.

I understand that Microsoft has protected those files to make sure they are compliant and integral with MS Store, however it's just strange that all other game clients allow us to view game's locations and add .exe files to other 3rd party software (like Logitech Profiler in that case) and game still is integral and playable with no issues whatsoever.

Anyway, thank you for help and explanation, much appreciated :)

    Hey Dave

I tried to change the permissions on the game and it indeed end up crashing the game on startup. Do you have any ideas on how to restore the permissions on Windows? I've already tried to reinstall Windows but it did not fix it.
