This is not related to a USB drive but to USB-C connected dockstations.
FWIW the laptop is a Dell Latitude 7490 and the two dockstations are Dell WD15 and Dell WD19.

Hi,
My work laptop has started to exhibit a very annoying issue:
Most of the time , when I reconnect it to a USB-C dockstation (occurs both at work and at home, with two different dockstation models: Dell WD15 at work, Dell WD19 at home), I get:
The only way out is to reboot the machine, which is quite disruptive.
How can I troubleshoot and fix this?
Should I uninstall (with the option to delete the driver) and reinstall the root "Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)" controller? And/or other drivers e.g. related to the PCI device tree? If so, I'd probably need an older driver than the one currently in use.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi sba,
I am Sumit here to assist you with this question.
There is a slight chance that the port may have become defective.
>>Should I uninstall (with the option to delete the driver) and reinstall the root "Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)" controller?
Yes, uninstall the USB3 drivers, check for BIOS updates and see if the issue resolves. After uninstalling, the drivers should automatically be installed on its own.
The Intel Driver Support Assistant didn't find newer drivers. Neither did Dell's Command|Update.
I've tried deleting both the USB 3.1 device and its USB 3.0 parent, to no avail.
Methinks I need to find a way to delete the driver files for everything USB and reinstall fresh ones.
I might also want to manually search for drivers on the Intel site, but I have doubts this would give me better drivers than the automated tool.
You may get a new driver on the Intel website, but I am not sure if the IT has enforced policy for it.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Thanks for your response.
For the BIOS update I'll need IT involvement 'cos it's locked with a password, and it's not their policy (!) to keep BIOSes updated.
For the USB3 drivers, my concern is that the auto-reinstall could pick up the same, faulty drivers. Will try.
