Mouse cursor moves erratically across screen

Hi!

A well known issue, with a lot of advice to be found, but nevertheless I can't fix it.

The mouse cursor starts moving rapidly, mostly horizontally, back and forth. Sometimes the user (it's not me) can use the laptop for an hour or two without any problem, sometimes it starts after only a few minutes.

The user had no problems using the mouse with his old laptop. He actually never uses the touch-pad.

It's a new Thomson laptop, with Windows 10 Family, version 20H2, 64 bit.

When the problem started, he bought a new mouse, but the issue persists.

The two mice are clean, there's no dust or anything.

No mouse-pad, the surface on which the mice are used, is laminated wood, but very smooth. We tried it with paper etc. underneath, but same problem. As already mentioned, he used the same surface + mouse with his old laptop.

Once the cursor continued to move erratically after unplugging the mouse. It was also impossible then to use the touch-pad correctly.

What else did we try?

Plugging the mice into other USB ports.

Unplugging any other peripheral device, in order to prevent possible interference.

The drivers are up to date.

I de-installed the drivers several times.

Pointer speed: is in the middle. I unchecked “enhance pointer precision”.

I launched the Device Diagnostic tool twice, but each time it stopped after a while, error 0x8000FFFF.

I then launched “DISM.exe ….RestoreHealth”, then “sfc /scannow” (as administrator), but no integrity violations were found.

I tried again the Device Diagnostic, but again the error message.

I don't remember what else I tried...

What strikes me is that the cursor, when gliding by itself over a shortcut, often launches the corresponding application.

When moving by itself, the cursor sometimes also “marks” some rectangular parts of the desktop, like when you hold down the left mouse button to mark text or an image.

Any ideas?

I'm in France, so there might be a time difference between me and whoever replies from another continent, and I'm not the user, I have to meet with him to try out anything else, so it might take a while until I can comment on any suggestions. Please be patient...

Thanks in advance

Michael

    Hello Michael.Hö, welcome to the Microsoft community, I'll be happy to help you today;

    I understand that the cursor moves randomly;

    This problem is usually caused by 3 reasons:

    Hardware problem (I believe this is not the case);

    Incompatible drivers;

    Virus;

    What exactly is your Thomson laptop model?

    Initially I recommend that you go to the manufacturer's website and update all drivers, especially touchpad;

    Clean boot;

    Clean boot serves to determine whether a background program is interfering with the system or optimizing system loading.

    1. Press the Windows + R keys, type msconfig and click OK;
    2. In the System Configuration window, click on the services tab;
    3. At the bottom of the screen, check the Hide all Microsoft services box and click Disable all;
    4. Now click on the Programs Startup tab and on Open Task Manager;
    5. When loading the task manager, click on the start tab and disable all non-Microsoft programs (right-click on the program and choose disable), close the Task Manager and click OK on system configuration and restart computer if requested.

    NOTE: This procedure disables all third party services and programs. You can later, if the problem is solved in this way, selectively enable the programs and services that will start with Windows, instead of keeping all disabled. If the problem returns after activating the startup of a specific service or program, the problem is exactly in the startup of this software and it is recommended to remove it.

    Run Windows Defender Offline for threats;

    Press Windows key + I and access Update and Security;

    Click Windows Security and then Open Windows Security;

    Click Virus and Threat Protection;

    Click Verification Options;

    Check "Microsoft Defender Offline Scan" and click Scan Now;

    After the offline scan, check if any threats were found on the computer;

    Check if the cursor still moves automatically;

    I hope I have helped, see you soon!

    Dear Luiz,

    here's what happened:

    First it wasn't possible to do anything because the cursor moved so wildly that there was no chance to carry out the recommended measures.

    I somehow managed to do a restart once or twice, and had to resort to a hard shutdown once or twice.

    Then everything calmed down a bit and I managed to run Windows Defender Offline. It went up to 91%, then shut down and the PC restarted. There was no result shown, nothing. I don't know whether this is normal.

    I ran it again, but the same, until 91%, then restart.

    Then the cursor was calm and I managed to carry out some of the other stuff you recommended.

    Driver update:

    I had already searched before for driver updates from the Thomson website, but there was nothing relevant to be found. On the affected laptop, I opened the device manager and checked everything, but the touch-pad driver and all other drivers were indicated as up to date after I had launched their corresponding updates.

    Clean boot:

    I performed a Clean Boot, and the cursor didn't move by itself afterwards. But as I had explained, sometimes the user didn't have problems for one or to hours.

    I ran again Defender Offline, but again it shut down after 91%. Is this normal?

    I ran Device Diagnostic again, but it stopped again with the error code 0x8000FFFF.

    I downloaded Malwarebytes, ran a scan, result was no threats discovered.

    Then it was dinner time. We left the laptop turned on. The cursor was quiet for quite a while, but then started again, very slowly, a bit to the left, a bit to the right.

    The user, an elder person, is quite tired of the problem. As there occurred already twice another issue - when starting the PC the screen was covered with wide vertical stripes in different grey tones, and a hard shutdown was necessary to restart it – it looks as if he's going to return the device.

    I told him to wait for maybe one last try today. So if you have any idea, I'd try it out. Otherwise he'll just bring it back to the store.

    Best regards

    Michael

    Hello Luiz,

    thanks for all the advice.

    I did run Defender offline and I think I did a Clean Boot, but will try everything again in the order you recommended.

    As it's not my laptop, it'll take a while until I get back to you with a result, half a day or a day... Please be patient :)

    Have a nice day

    Michael
