FlushDNS does NOT empty cache completely

I'm unable to display a laptop's directories/files in the explorer of my MAIN home computer running W10Pro. I can access the directory/files by inputting the laptop's ip and shared name. But I cannot access them by clicking on the laptop icon on windows explorer.

Believing it's a DNS thing, I flushed the DNS cache. With the browser closed I quickly did a Get-DnsClientCache. This is what still remains in the cache.

The laptop's computer name is correct but the ip is from when I connected the laptop to my LAN via WiFi. It's now connected via ethernet.

My laptop is running Windows 10 Home.

I even tried this on both the laptop and my "main" computer.

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

netsh winsock reset

Restart

Still no luck

Any suggestions

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Senior, my name is Jose. I'm a Windows user like you. I'm glad to assist you with this issue.

I'm sorry to hear that you have this issue. In order to fix this today, please select Start and type Notepad. From the right, select Run as administrator. In Notepad select File, then select Open. Browse the following path:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc. Change the file type from Text file to all file. Next select Host file and click open button. Look for the ip that you are getting in your dns cache and remove the entire line, then save it.

Please, let me know if you need anything else.

OK, I found the file and corrected it per your instructions. Thank you for that.

NOW..... Access in one direction only

I can see the icon of my laptop in the Main computers explorer

I can see the icon of my MAIN computer in my laptops explorer

I can click on the MAIN computer icon on laptop to access Main computer files

    BUT

I cannot click on the laptop icon in the MAIN computer explorer to access the laptop.

I get the "You do not have permission to access \laptop name...blah blah"

    THIS IS WHAT I'VE TRIED

Shared the users directory on the laptop with everyone and with full control.

\ip address of laptop from MAIN computer explorer screen... no help

Checked the Network Share settings... all correct

    Reset the network adapters

    disabled firewalls... no help

    smb1 enabled

SMB1 is disabled with SMBv2/3 enabled.

sfc /scannow both computers without any problems

I can ping the laptop from the MAIN computer without any errors

The LAN management authorization level on both machines are set to "Send NTLMv2 response only

Removed laptop credentials in Credential Manager and tried \laptopname in the run box.

    SO

I've run out of things I can try.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Bill
