Win 10 and using an external optical drive

I have windows 10, a desktop, and when I ordered it from HP I forgot to include a CD-R OR CD-RW. I figured that just purchasing one and plugging it into a usb port would solve my issue. Initially it worked, kinda. The other day I messed up and ended up having to re-install my system. The only real issue was my scrabble game on a CD. In the past I've always installed it and never really had any issues. Not so this time. I hear spinning and the light on the unit lights up, but nothing shows up on the desktop. I've checked that it is listed in device manager, I've replaced the dvd driver and have run the troubleshooter.

And I get messaged from the computer to put something into the device. I do and it is not being recognized.

I have read some search results that state on one point that win 10 and external optical drives do not work out, and other search results say it is possible.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have no problems with USB device (see picture) in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

DVD drive has two separate elements (read-write heads) inside - for CDs and DVDs - and one common part. Each head reads-writes corresponding disk and common part interacts with PC. DVDs but not CDs are working well - this means the CD head may be degraded - it is a common process unfortunately.

Thank you for your feedback. So you are saying that your unit does work on win 10 and so I possibly look for a better quality DVD writer. I do have both CD's and DVD's.

Your feedback is very much appreciated.

Did you try another CD disk (not DVD!)?

    > and read that any dvd/cd unit will not work on Win 10.

This is a fake. I have four years old external Hitachi-LG portable DVD writer and see no problems in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The information on the device says LG slim portable DVD writer. I have had it for about a year or two. I have a Win 10 desktop without any cd/dvd player. So I have the dvd writer connected to a usb port that isn't working correctly, if at all. It has worked in the past, but since the other day, it is dead.

What can I use to read and write a cd/dvd? Or is that not workable? One of my favorite games, scrabble, is not installing at all.

This all started the other day when I was playing on my desktop, scrabble, and all of a sudden everything went "gafooey" and it was as if the computer had a heart attack. I get messaged from the computer that their isn't an operating system on the computer. I had to reinstall Windows and lost everything.

    I forward to your response.

I have researched this stuff on the internet and read that any dvd/cd unit will not work on

    Win 10.

    Many thanks,

Can you try another CD disk (not DVD!)? Is this drive new or old and how old?
