Uninstal AVG, get out of safe mode

I'm sure that the expression to boot a computer comes from the desire to boot one through the window. This is quite a saga.

It started when I decided to put Norton on my ancient Windows 7 desk top. (I mainly use it to copy vinyl records and listen to music while I work on another computer. It's generally adequate.)

Norton wouldn't instal due to the presence of AVG installed by the previous owner. Control Panel couldn't uninstal it. I Googled the problem and received advice to download a fix from AVG. It wouldn't instal. Then I was told that the computer had to be in safe mode, I rebooted in safe mode. I still couldn't instal it. To make matters worse, I couldn't get out of safe mode. Now I have a computer that can't produce any sound.

System restore, the other restore options in Windows 7, and the recovery boot disc I made when I got the computer won't work.

Can someone help me? I am willing to format the drive or take any action that might destroy data on drive C. (My own data is stored on external drives.)

I would really appreciate it if someone can help me and save what is left of my sanity.

Best wishes to you all,

Boot it!

    You are welcome.

Deleting all AVG files, if you can find them all, has to be done, or other AVs still detect any presence of prior AVs.

Is this what you used? https://www.avg.com/en-au/avg-remover

    https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlname=Uninstall-AVG-Antivirus

https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000DrkJAASThis tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces. Open tool User Account control - click "Yes" Windows safe mode - click "No" (we cannot recommend use the tool in safe mode, because there is a problem with compability) Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)

    If none of that works, you could look at this;

Usethis free Revo Uninstaller Program to remove it.

FYI: be VERY careful not to post links here as it is classified as spamming.

I will have to remove it.

    Hello again, Bill,

I had tried all of those and I just tried all of them again. Nothing worked. As they won't instal, I suspect that there is a problem either with the computer or Windows. I get the message that "The system cannot find the file specified" when I try.

I have 2 options- try to remove the files manually from the program directory or stick with AVG and buy their VPN. I can use the 2nd Norton licence on my tablet. I'm a bit reluctant to use the first option because if there are remaining fragments I might not even be able to instal AVG.

Anyway, I think I've spent enough time on this. It's time I got back to doing what I should be doing, ie studying web design so that I can make my horrible photography website as good as the photographs that it showcases. It's at < Link removed by VM > if you would like to have a look.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you again.

    Best wishes,

    James Vernon

Thank you very much, Bill. The computer is now booting normally and sound has been restored. I have saved your reply for future reference. Now all I have to do is get rid of AVG. What would happen if I simply deleted all of the AVG files from the programs folder? I know this regarded as not being the right thing to do.

Thank you once again. At least I can use the machine for what I normally do, forget about Norton and the VPN and not use that computer on the net.

As my mother would have said, "Your blood is worth bottling".

Sound does not work in Safe mode.

Not many Services do as it is a troubleshooting mode.

    1. Close any running programs and open Windows so you are back at the desktop.
    2. Click on the Start (Image) button.
    3. In the Start Menu Search Box type msconfig
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard.
    5. The System Configuration utility will open
    6. Make sure Startup Selection is set for Normal Startup.
    7. Click on the Boot tab.
    8. Make sure  Safe boot is unchecked
    9. Press the Apply button and then press the OK button.
    10. Click on the Restart button to reboot your computer.

    OR:

What are the system recovery options in Windows 7?

Do a System Restore in Safe Mode.

"How to Do a System Restore in Windows 7":

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

"Advanced startup options (including safe mode)"

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode#1TC=windows-7

"The Advanced Boot Options screen lets you start Windows in advanced troubleshooting modes. You can access the menu by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts (Tap F8 at the rate of about once per second)"

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

If that does not fix it, follow this method:

Often a Start-up Repair, etc. disk will work where the built-in Repair Software won't

Make your own System Repair Disk from the information in this Tutorial:

"How to Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc"

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

"This will show you how to create a Windows 7 system repair disc to be able to use to boot to **system recovery options** to help recover your Windows 7 installation if you don't have a Windows installation disc, can't find your Windows installation disc, or can't access the recovery options provided by your computer manufacturer.

A system repair disc is not able to install Windows 7.

Image   Note If you are unable to boot your Windows 7 to create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc, then you could create it on another computer to use on your computer."

Then use that Disk for the System Recovery Options:
