Deleting Display Drivers

Hey

So I have a mad BSoD problem and I have been told to use the DDU tool to remove Display drivers before reinstalling them.

However, I realized that the graphics driver installed is not the one I installed, it's already there somewhere on the computer.

I used DDU again and just left my laptop and within like 10 minutes of leaving it idling, the Intel Iris Xe graphics kicked in.

I don't want that to happen and I want the drivers I install to work. What do I do?

    That's Visual C++ that's installed to run certain programs, not Display.

    I read your old thread with Dave guiding you to install an Intel Display driver that apparently worked. To confirm, the problem is that something is installing a different driver that is again causing the BSOD's, correct?

    If so then the first suspect is WIndows Updates. To check this go into Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Updates to uninstall the Update.

    Then immediately install the Hide Updates tool from here:

    Run it to find and hide the Update before it reinstalls.

    If that doesn't do it then run the HP Support Assistant to see if it is offering and trying to install the Update. If so see if you can decline the driver, or if necessary turn off Support Assistant at Startup so it can't install it in background, as shown here:

    If neither of these is pushing the driver but the System is reinstalling it then to extract it from the Windows/System32 folder use this method:

    This thread was the one that made me do a lot of the stuff but after 2 days, my pc screen glitched for a second and in a few minutes i got a BSoD with the file causing the problem as igdkmdn64.sys.

    So im really in trouble i guess.

    Since you have HP and I see you have the HP Support Assistant, have you run it to Update your drivers and firmware? It usually does a good job and saves you headaches like this.

    The Display Control Service isn't the graphics drivers, per set, but a control panel for it that you might need once you reinstall it. But if you know you don't then you could uninstall it as it's HP bloatware and most enthusiasts won't let bloatware on their PC unless it is known to provide an important function they need. You can read more fully about any of them via Google, but the only one I'd keep is HP Support Assistant, just like the only one I keep on my Dell laptop is Dell Updater because like HPSA it does a good job and doesn't cause conflicts.

    Hey Greg

    Happy New Year and thank you so much.

    The first one, HP Display Control Service and Intel Graphics command center are the only things I can find related to that. Should I install that?

    Hi NavSM. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

    See if you can uninstall the driver in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features, if not from the Device Manager and watch for prompt to also uninstall software.

    If not and the driver is already onboard in System32 folder, here is how to find and manually extract it:

    The Display driver is so important that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

    First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

    While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

    If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

    For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

    You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

    Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

    Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.
